What collar would you recommend for daily wear? Leather? Nylon? Treated nylon? Durasoft? Others?

amen. he means the nylon fabric i am pretty sure, not the solid plastic nylon material. 1"

also, please go to Nite Lite or someplace similar, buy a bunch of name tags that can be riveted on collars, and put them on every collar you might put on the dog, including e-collars etc. They are really cheap insurance. http://www.huntsmart.com/index.cfm/fuse ... -262/pos/2

Right on John. And I was going to add about the name plate but then thought he was just asking about the collar so I let it go. Many places you can order them with the name tag already riveted in place for a buck or so extra.

OK. You guys like the nylon, but not the coated nylon version.. right? Any brand better than another?

just get one with the ring built into the collar and not the type that the ring hangs down on.

Hey guys, I ordered the riveted name tags on my collars from cabelas. I ordered 2. One of the collars has been fine, another (braided) kept popping a rivet. I had to get a total of 4 collars before the rivets finally stayed. Then the dog wrecked the collar so i said heck with it, she now just wears the choke chain. I'll get her a name tag soon. The riveted are really nice, but be careful! hate to have the same problem happen to you!

I've never had a rivet problem but if you do it is easy to fix. And I sure wouldn't run a dog or even kennel a dog with a choke chain on. That is asking for trouble. All the dog has to do is jump up on the side of the kennel run and get the chain caught and it will be dead by the time you find it. Same thing running in the field. I have had to go get several dogs that had their collar cuaght on wire and once a limb that would have meant a dead dog if that collar was a choke chain.

Ezzy is right on, choke chains are for supervised training only, lots of bad things can happen otherwise.

I have used the coated nylon ones from LCS for years and have loved them, cheap, durable, smell resistant, easy to clean, etc. Why do some of you guys advise against the coated nylon ones?

I guess I'm old fashioned. I like quality leather collars, and I think some of the nicest available are made by Winner's Circle, Shelbyville TN.
These are not only well made, they're beautiful with solid brass hardware and solid brass decorative studs.
The patterns they used were the ones made famous by the late great leathermen Charles and Bud Hulan. I have leather roading harnesses made by the Hulans 60 years ago that are still useable.
If they're good enough for the National Bird Dog Champions to wear they're good enough for my kids... ps. the JASA collar is the real thing as well.

I like leather collars too, though I think nylon probably lasts longer.

It's hard to find a leather collar that's cut just right though. My last one was perfect, except it was 18" long. I cut the length, sanded the cut edge, and punched two new holes in it, and now it's sized just right. Buckle at the bottom, O-ring at the top, a direct 180 degrees from each other.

For hunting I like the more visible plastic coated nylon in orange for white dogs and the bright yellow for darker dogs. The regular nylon seems to color fade quicker and are harder to clean if your dog happens to roll in cow manure or dead animal carcass (for some reason it happens every now and then). The regular nylon (double ply) is stronger and I have used them for training.

gunner-

i used to use leather on all my dogs. they would get a collar at adult hood, and i would put it on the wall when they were gone. used to get em custom made, if i recall it was hulme, or some fella who advertised in the field anyway.

but i noticed the leather ones always stained the dog a little, especially when new. have gone to the nylon fabric, safety style with the ring built in, not hanging down, so they are less likely to catch on stuff. not as traditional but works well.

haven't ever had a problem with the Nite Lite (now I think it is huntsmart.com) rivets. You need to use a soldering iron to punch a hole in the collar for the rivet. the rivet has two prongs on the back side. split the prongs with a flat bladed screw driver, then put the rivet head on an anvil or other hard surface and pound the prongs down against the collar really flat. they do not come loose. i put them on my ecollar, my tracker, and every other collar i have. last year we found a dog running free in ND with a radio collar (Wildlife Materials) and an ecollar. both had malfunctioned. he lost that dog about 10 in the morning, and because the dog had a tag with phone numbers, we had it back to him in the evening.

brand on those nylons is not important. would get the double thickness ones though.

Hi John,

I'll stick with the leather collars from WC but I do slip one of the wide florecent vinyl collars over it when running when braced in competion with a similiar marked dog.
I hope your hunting and triaing season has been successful.

best regards
Bill

you too. hunting season was great for us. lots of pheas. and many sharptails, but we hunt in an area where you have to work for the birds, so the dogs get alot of practice. trialing is just starting up end of Jan. I will probably make my first trial of the year in Feb., at the NGSPA Nationals. Nothing like Ames, but nice dogs, good trial. Dog is still three so is starting to come into his own in those hour stakes, we hope.

hope your season went well also.

i heard that the U.S. Chicken Championship is leaving Solon Springs. They have been talking about that for years. Have had a couple accidents with dogs on roads, and the bird population has continued to shrink. They are taking it to SD.

I use whatever they wont eat off each others necks.

I like the fluorescent hunter orange in a plasticized collar wit hthe lite strips so they reflect at nite in case we go out for coons, easy to pick out my dogs that way.

Choke collars will choke a dog, stay away from them they were a bad idea when first introduced, use the leather with nails (pinch collar) for training.

Some of the nylon collars seem to swell up making it hard to undo them, I also use metal buckles as the plastic snap togethers get chewed up. I let my dogs out when I am out, they tend to tussel a lot.

The local (local of course being a loosely used term as there are 3 within 20 minutes or so of my house) walmart they have the orange nylon plastic coated w/ o ring built into the collar & theey are always in the clearance section for about $4-5 they are long, but easy to cut down & punch a new hole in. That is what I have on my gsp & lab, & I haven't had any problems whatsoever. They are kinda shiny in the dark too.

I have had good luck with these.

Name plate is included. Cowboy's last forever. Cooper gets a new one every month or so because Cowboy chews it off him.
