Perdiguero de Burgos

Post by Hondo » Wed Aug 18, 2010 3:56 pm

Anyone have any information on this breed. The Perdiguero de Burgos seems really interesting. From what I have read the Perdiguero de Burgos were one of the foundation breeds used to create the German Shorthaired Pointer. This is a dog I have never even heard of until a few days ago.

It looks like it is recognized by the UKC. However, I haven't been able to find any breeders/clubs in the United States.

This breed has peaked my curiousity.

Any information I have found is obviously from websites in Spain. However, I can't tell how popular the breed is in that country.

The hardest thing, though, is listening to dogs bark in a romance language. It takes some getting used to.

Here is what I know:

1. The photo in the first post is mine. I took it in Spain a couple of years ago and sent a copy to the folks in the club to use on their site. I now find it all over the place...oh well.

2. The Perdiguero de Burgos (Burgos Pointer) is another branch of the Old Spanish Pointer line that is still being bred today. There are two clubs in Spain, each claiming that they have the "real" Burgos. There is a pretty fierce debate between the clubs. I visited with members of the larger, more hunt-focused club. You can read about my visit and see some photos of the dogs here:

I purchased a Burgos Pointer puppy from Spain last fall. I'm very impressed with how easy she is to handle and a joy to be around. Not too much energy like so many pointing breeds. She hunts slower and more methodical. Because of this she never out runs her nose and has already pointed more wild pheasant (here in Ohio) than any one of my older and more experienced GSPs. She's a keeper. In fact I'm going to breed her after she turns two years old (summer of 2019). We'll be hunting the U.P. for grouse this fall and Kansas pheasant shortly after.

If you are even remotely interested in minority breeds, Craig's book is amazing.

I agree, I can hardly begin to imagine how much time and thought and effort and travelling went into the making of Craig's book.
