Runt Of the Litter
Runt Of the Litter
The last post got me wondering. My 9 month old GSP is about 48 pounds. He was the "runt" of the litter. Is that light for his age or has he caught up as he got older ? Not that it makes much difference I was just wondering what the average weight of a 9 month old GSP.
Re: Runt Of the Litter
It all depends on the parents genetics. 48 lbs at 9 mos is not that small. I personally likethem smaller anyway. He is still young and will still grow a little more.

A runt is what I have. LOL 28 pound setter. Born dead , I had to revive her. Ontario Walking Derby Dog of the Year. Fireball in the field.

Sharon, Gotta love it.
I would say a 49 pound GSP at 9 months will end up near 60 pounds or so. Good size. Just a guess.

The best part of training is seeing the light come on in your little prot'eg'e.

Delmar Smith always said that his choice of a litter was the last dog remaining. He seemed to do OK with 'em.

Re: Runt Of the Litter
Seems like even though he was half the size of his litter mates he has caught back up. I wieghed him yesterday and he's 50 lbs. I have no idea how big his brothers and sisters are. It would be interesting to find out. I would guess he has some more growing left at 9 months. Originally I thought he would top out around 50. When do most do stop growing ?

Re: Runt Of the Litter
They normally complete their fast growth & weight gain by about age one but can continue to grow slightly & fill out through about one & a half years old. They all grow at different rates. My dogs seem to have very rapid growth until about 9 months, moderate growth 10-12 months & slight growth & filling out after 12 months.
