Can anybody recommend a good book?

Post by Gundog » Thu Sep 09, 2010 8:40 am

Because that dummy stuff isn't working out that well I thought of something different. I would like to try tracking but don't really know how to start. Any ideas? Can anybody recommend a good book?

Thanks

Glen R. Johnson is the granddaddy of teaching tracking. I have this book and it's excellent. Good luck.

Abney works with an unusual breed - the Catahoula.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Ditto. I also really like the book below, even if you do not have a pup. I did a ton of tracking with Max when he was young and he was a tracking machine. Then, all of a sudden, he started quartering on his tracks searching for birds. I will definitely go back to it someday but with obedience training and bird training, I have no time now.

Do you have a tracking club in your area? I started with a the help of a friend in my obedience club who has been tracking his dogs for years. It helped tremendously to have another person...

PS- Here is a good site for harnesses, tracking lines, articles, etc

Not that unusual of a breed if you are from Louisiana. :D

I am guessing that may be where you are originally from Cajun Casey.

I am as well. 2 Coona$$es in Oklahoma.

cool, thanks a million. I really want to keep my dog busy and since he doesn't really like dummys (not interested in them at all) this could be an alternative for us. We'll see. Maybe I should by that book you guys recommended and see if I like it :D

I really do like this forum. Everybody is so helpful

The Louisiana state dog! They are great all around farm, guard, hunting dogs.

Plus they are some cool looking beasts. Some of the eyes on those dogs are amazing. Here's one:

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.
