Pre Fab Kennel

Post by Brittowner » Sat Sep 11, 2010 8:05 pm

I have been looking at a pre fab kennel that the amish builders in PA make. The kind that can be seen at places like Pine Creek Structures, Fisher Structures and the other pre made storage shed builders. The kennel is basically an insulated shed, with two divided sleeping areas inside. The outside has two kennel runs under roof I believe they are 4ft by 6ft. The flooring of the runs is composite deck wood similar to Trex deck. I wish I had pictures to post. May take a drive to look at them again tomorrow and get some pictures.

I currently have three britts in the house. My plan is to move my three year old male and my 4month old unspayed female pup out to this pen/kennel. I currently keep them in one of those 10 by 10 dog pens from tractor supply, outfitted with a house and elevated bed; during the day when we are at work. They are in there together for now, but obviously will need to be separated when the pup begins having heat cycles.

I will be running electric into the building for heat, light and maybe even air conditioning. The dogs will still be brought into the house when we are home, but this will be used more frequently than my current set up. I want a place where I can put them up after runs when they get filthy and not feel too bad if it turns into over night or other times when I need a break from them.

My main question is anybody familiar with these kennels and do you think the composite decking of the floor will hold up and be sanitary? I will have a lot of money wrapped up in this so I would like to get some opinions.

Wow! This is exactly what I'm looking for too! I've only seen a couple of people with them but they built their own. Thanks for posting. I am going to look into this as well.

My males can tear up a chain link kennel in a very short time if a female in season is near. I use the heavy duty welded steel kennels. The building is big is it divided and the access blocked someway inside.

Remmy, there's a place on Route 31...maybe Clinton or Flemmington, that carries them. They have one on display. I pass it on my way to Medford. I should be heading that way in 2 weeks if you want me to get the name of the place.

One draw back is teh chain link is not heavy duty. Do not think I will have problems with them tearing it up, but do worry about it eventually rusting out. It is about the same guage as the stuff used in the kennels tractor supply sells.

The inside has two divided sleeping quarters with five foot high wood walls. i may need to customize a bit. I was thinking of addind fencing at the top to the roof. i think I could use heavy duty pig fence and 2x4 to frame it. Maybe put hinges on so that it can be opened. I will also be replacing teh supplied doors with gun dog kennel doors.

The remaining space can be used for storage for all of my dog training equipment.

Interesting.. I like the concept. However, the kennel part of it would have to be welded wire. Chainlink doesn't stand up to well, and after some chewing and pawing at, isn't very aesthetically pleasing. I wonder how much coin they're asking for the structure? It could be built fairly easily. Hmmm.. Winter Project?
