German Shorthair Stud/ Who to Breed to
German Shorthair Stud/ Who to Breed to
I have a german shorthair female that I really like due to come in heat anytime and I am looking for a great shorthair stud to breed her to. I am a pointer guy so I am not familiar with the Shorthair lines, and was wondering what you guys thought would be a good cross with my female. She is out of NFC Showtimes Rollin Thunder. I am looking for big running dogs. Her entire pedigree is at the link below. Thanks

I would consider this dog. Im also a pointer guy and this dog can move. 2008 AA dog of the year. Multiple AA Championships and SD Championships. The best part is the owner bird hunts him off of foot. Shows brains.

Your dog is not line bred so whichever stud you chose the outcome will be a bit unpredictable. Generally the slightly smaller GSP will have a natural advantage in the run department. Check out some of the field trail champs here: http://www.gspca.org/NFT/index.html & http://www.ngspa.org/DOY-2010.html & http://www.ngspa.org/past-NatlCH.html .

Some of the canine geneticists prefer breeding like to like, rather than line/inbreeding. So for the proponents of assortive matings...you have big run? want big run? breed to big run regardless of ped, and you should get big run.
So I can distill this down even further. Have a class bird dog (with all the trapping that make up a class dog) simply breed to another class bird dog.

You might want to check with Robbi at Blue Dawn Kennels. They have a FC that has placed in championships out of NFC/FC Chisholm Creek's Cuttin' Loose and a Showtime Rollin Thunder female. His call name is "Aggie". Have not seen him, but understand he's really a nice dog. . Might try going to the dogs for sale thread and find a post "another possible BDK breeding" for a picture of "most" of the dog and read the thread..Hope this helps

Re: German Shorthair Stud/ Who to Breed to
Dan,
I said nothing about a preference for breeding method. Perhaps the point is made more clear by indicating that with any first time breeding, especially with an outcross, there is less predictability of outcomes. Theoretically if you were continuing a line breeding there would be a greater likelihood of reproducing predictable traits. The OP said nothing about whether he/she desired to avoid reducing run in the offspring or wanted to add run. Furthermore run without bottom (stamina) has little value. In a similar fashion there are dogs that'll run big .... right off into the sunset! Speaking for myself I'd look for a dog that runs big but shows an interest in going with the handler or hunter.
P.S. I'd call the breeder of your female's litter. Tell the breeder what you're looking for and ask their advice.

Mark,
My reply to you was addressing your assertion that "the outcome will be a bit unpredictable."
Unpredictable how so? Type?
That could very well be, but I'll give up uniformity of type for talent. Breed like traits to like traits....get more like traits. Would be a bonus if the peds shared a similar type.
But the op is free to solicit opinions...I gave mine, however indirectly.

I have a Ricky son out of a Cajun's Burning Desire daughter by a Clown son. Powerful young dog, but not going to win any beauty contests. Kane would likely produce similar results. Ricky blood might cross well with Tonelli's Rising Sun dogs, too. JMO.

I would get ahold of Ken Chenoweth. He has bred to Rick many times. He owned/bred/trained many of the dogs on the bottom of your bitches pedigree. I'll PM you his #.

Re: German Shorthair Stud/ Who to Breed to
I have a 15mo old female that is out of Rick Hopkins' Fritz dog that did a great job on grouse last week in Wisconsin. This line of dogs seems to have a super nose and mentality to handle wild birds . This female pointed about half a dozen grouse and was backed by some pretty nice bird dogs by any hunters' standards; she also pointed a gross of woodcock. I'm not posting to promote any particuler sire but this pup certainly impressed me on her first trip to the grouse woods.
