Just think that there are over 4 times as many of them bred each year than Gordons.Ayres wrote:Lots of folks think my vizsla pup is a coon dog, and the ones who can see that it clearly isn't a coon dog still ask me what kind of breed it is. When I tell them it's a vizsla, the look I get in response is usually one of "what the heck is that?"
I then tell them: "He's a bird dog."

Yes, but...
When I started researching breeds to get a pup, I had already heard of Gordon Setters and I had not heard of Vizslas.
Also take for example that Vizslas rank 46 while Irish Setters rank 59. I guarantee that an Irish Setter is more easily identified by a member of the general public than a Vizsla.
But, yes, I feel your pain. Before I actually researched dog breeds I was going to go with what dog looked best and fit my size requirements. A Harrier is a dog that looks to be a cross between a Beagle and a Foxhound, and is a medium size between the two. Just try to get your hands on one of those! I was making phone calls to California!
I'm sure glad I got off my keister and onto the web to research a bunch of dog breeds before getting my pup. I ended up researching, communicating and cavorting with vizslas and viz breeders for about a year before I got my pup. I'd recommend that to anyone though.

I also made the mistake of telling someone my dog is a bird dog. Which he took to mean that GSPs are bird dogs, and bird dogs are GSPs, and GSPs only. I later overheard him at the park referring to my dog as a bird dog and basically suggesting only GSPs are bird dogs, and when someone says a dog is a bird dog, it has to be a dog like Fletch.
And this guy has a Lab from hunting lines

We had a "debate" over registrations a few months back on another site. The FDSB registry has dropped from around 24,000 total news registrations each year, to about 15,000 for calendar year 03. The drop has been continual and dramatic.
The registry is about fifty percent English Pointers, thirty percent, English Setters, with Gsp's at about 3-4%, Brits, 2-3% and all other ponting breeds making up the balance.
Pretty sad considering how much older the registry is, than AKC and when you look at the increase in GSP's in the same time period which have increased by around 1200 per year since 95 Total GSP registration today is about 40% higher than either Es, or Ep. FDSB doesn't publish that data, I simply had to call and talk to the registration's head. CR

There's a reason I like dogs better'n people
people always think my dogs are labs (especially when i actually have my lab WITH my other 2) then they accuse me of lying when i tell them they are NOT labs, but a gsp and a dk. the best though, was when a fellow gsp owner told me there was no such thing as a dk. i guess condor is a hollogram.... i didn't know those could eat!

Ok, I'm lost. Maybe I'm just not up on all the acronyms that are used in the dog breed world. But... what the heck is a "dk?"

Deutsch Kurzhaar - translated to english is German Shorthair (without the point part) The "Pointer" was added when they gained AKC registration status. The AKC needed to have some type of type characterization in the name. They were consider both a retriever and pointer, so they had to pick one or the other.
