Xmas Book?

Post by rkappes » Sat Nov 06, 2010 11:48 am

Never been much of a reader but love reading/learning about gun dogs and dogs in general. Figured a book would make a great Christmas gift and give me something to do over the winter months. Any suggestions on a good read? I thought Snakefoot looked interesting.

Anything by Bill Tarrant. You'll have to look around. Much is out of print. Rick Bass's Colter is a great dog story and the newly published anthology Afield has some good pieces.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

If you don't mind a search then Where Spaniels Spring by Ken Roebuck would be the pick.

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.

Ruark's "The Old Man and The Boy" is a classic that belongs on every hunter's bookshelf. The sequel is also very good.

Harry Middleton had a God-given talent and a tortured soul...he left waaay too quickly.
Not really a dog guy(to a great extent) tho....all his books are treasures.

GBE is unique in many ways but many love to put him down.
Still, his voice is missed each October.
Dogs mentioned are only Old Hemlocks.

The others all are ok with different subjects and takes.

Don't forget Gordon MacQuarrie, Rick Bass, Gene Hill, Michael McIntosh,etc...the list is long.
Most have something to dig out of them, even the how-to books.

Without a doubt tho the finest capital W, writer of the lot is Corey Ford. :!:

If you're still looking, "Jenny Willow" by Mike Gaddis is a great read. I'd recommend it to anyone... bird dog fan or not. Snakefoot is a a good one as well.

Jenny Willow
I'd rather live on the side of a mountain, than wander through canyons of concrete and steel.
