English Pointer

Post by redman25 » Mon Nov 15, 2010 7:42 am

Can I get some recommendations on good english pointer breeders? I have a GSP pup that I love, but would like to eventually aquire and EP as well. Probably a couple years down the road, but it took me that long to find exactly what I wanted in a GSP :D

What do you hunt, what type of terrain, location, how do you feel about range in a dog, do you like a certain "color/marking", would you ever want to trial the dog, etc.? Give us some insight to you...I have a ton of options for you...

No field trials. I'll be ruff hunting in the WV mountains a good bit in the winter months, and trying to find what quail I can here in the lowcountry of SC, so varying cover. A closer ranging EP would probably suit me a little better, I think. I like the white/liver markings best I think, but the white/orange markings are nice too. Not big on black. Thanks

Redman -

Rookie is absolutely right. A whole lot depends on what you yourself want in a dog. Pointers, like GSP's have an enormous span of natural abilities and it is best to match the dog's natural tendencies to what your performance expectations are.

I would suspect that, since you are now hunting over a GSP, that there will not be all that much of an adjustment for you if you get a pointer. They are very similar in many ways.

redman, here are a few sites to get you started. Many kennels will do you right if you tell them exactly what you want and are willing to wait for them to help you out. Some sites rarely get updated so do not let the actual content sway you. You may be looking for a "closer working" dog than most of these produce, BUT be honest with them and listen to their advice.

Brice Morris is breeding some nice dogs, runs a good kennel and an honest guy. I bred to his Rico dog and I certainly like what that dog is throwing.

Heres one you might want to check out right now.

http://clearspringkennels.netkennel.com/

Jim Emerson is a stand up guy who will tell it to you straight. He has a young female pointer for sale.

If it is the same youngster I saw last summer, she is a dandy.

Redman,

I believe we spoke on the phone. :)

After reviewing the responses I would agree that any of the breeders listed would be a good choice for a Pointer pup. ...even Chris! (Just kidding!)

...and you are welcome to visit our kennel anytime.

Ross.

PS GSPs and Pointers go great together!!

We did share emails Ross, and thanks again for the quick response.

Everyone on here has been very helpful, and it's amazing how supportive of each other that you all are.....very refreshing in todays world. I'll be taking my time on this one, and it's great to have so many choices.

I have a nice male pup out of Nella's running tab and my linbred elhew dog Echo available. He is making a nice bird dog, good nose, a lot of natural retieve, and very personable.

That's right, email ...not phone. Sorry. :D

BTW, I picked up Rocky, my dog that just won the New England Championship and Jack, my avatar, from George Tracy today. I'm going to work them before the SC Championship. The SC Championship starts the Sunday after Thanksgiving and if you want to see some of the best Pointers in the country, you should try to make it up to Patrick, SC! Many of the top Shooting Dogs will be running including Mike & Jeanette Tracy's strings as well as Luke Eisenhart's string, John Ray Kimbrell's string and many others! These are the cream of the crop and they will be running in your back yard!

If you'd like to attend, give me a ring ...er email, and I'll hook you up.

Here's Rocky's Championship win. Cool site.

Checked out that site, and from the sound of it, noone else had a shot after your dog hit the ground. Congratulations! I doubt I'll be able to make it up to Patrick at the moment, but if I can get free I'll let you know. I'd definitely love to see it!
