Thanks for the advice ya'll! Deposit is down on my new pup!

Post by Onk » Tue Dec 14, 2010 10:32 pm

After much flip flopping and family debate I have put down my deposit on my first bird dog that is not started or at least 2yrs old needing work! Starting from step 1 with a new puppy ( due on Christmas) will be a big step. Hope I can learn enough to do the pup justice, time to start studying! By the way it is not only my first new born pup but also my first Brittany. Excited as all get out, thanks for all the advice I got from all you GDF members, I'm sure there will be more questions to follow!

I think you'll find that your brittany pup will not only become a fine bird dog but also a family member. I have two brittany's and they truly have become a part of the family, they have quite the personality!

Fireside you must be right, I won't have my pup till sometime in Feb. or early Mar. and I have already ordered the coolest DOUBLE outside kennel. Now is that planning ahead or what? Of course I have told my wife that the kennel can't be set up till april or so because its cold and the pad can't be poored in these temps.! That will give her a few months to come to grips with having a new house dog! Kennel will be for day time when we are at work and those out of town times!

Very good strategy on the wife. After your dog is 2 or so, start the "I really think the dog is lonely, he needs a playmate." :D

I try to get every new pointing dog owner to get the Huntsmith Puppy I and II DVDs. No matter where you go from there with your training, they are the best money you'll ever spend.

Once your wife starts to hold the pup she will fall in love and not want it outside. By April it won't even be a problem.

Kirby you could look into getting "First Steps" by Ben Garcia. Ben is a good friend and a good trainer. Not sure but I bet you can order it from Gun Dog Supply!!
