Gun Dog and The Pointing Dog Journal

Post by Onk » Sat Jan 01, 2011 8:35 pm

I was in the city today and picked up the latest issues of these mags and really enjoyed them so far! If I subscribe to only one of them for now I was leaning to the Journal. Think they will both be in my mail box after I recover from Christmas, kennel, puppy and training dvd buying!

I get both and I like the Pointing Dog Journal better, it seems a lot more personal to me. I like the stories they put in it as well. GunDogMag is a good magazine but seems to generic I guess?

I think the best part of Pointing dog journal is Spaulding Hoffhackers article man that guy cracks me up.

ONK,
I get Gun Dog and have just reordered the PGJ to be sent to the mountain home. Both are decent mags but neither is the magazine Dave Meisner
made them into, they have faded no doubt about it. However the Grouse Point Almanac was just great for the limited time it was around, not big on what it has become
either. I would say get both Gun Dog and the PDJ if you have the money.
Ya Spaulding is a hoot.

Ryman, This is the first time I have every seen PDJ but think I have seen Gun Dog before. Found both informative.

I would be interested ...I like to take the older ones and put them in the club house for our clients to read while they are waiting

I used to subscribe to both magazines, but let them both expire around 2001 or 2002 after it seemed like I was just reading the same old articles. Of the two, I liked PDJ much better. A good friend bought me a subscription again to the PDJ so I could get access to post on their bulletin board.

PDJ for me as well. Subscribe to PDJ but end up buying GD often enough that I might as well get it too.

Being a setter owner Spaulding is awesome

If you like the dog pictures check out the holiday issue of the American field. That one is really loaded with the top past and present bird dogs. Nice paintings and old photos. I don't know if you can buy it outright or if you have to be a subscriber. Also Doublegun journal has really nice stuff also. Lots of shotguns that cost more than the average home. If anyone has a collection of those magazines for sale i would be interested.

If I want to feel really bad about my place in life. I go to "Shooting Sportsmen". There I can see all the guns that I want, but I'll never be able to afford.

Pdj is great I also like shooting sportsman which is a little fancier. Also I came across a magazine called garden and gun. Its kind of southern living meets shooting sportsman so I subscribed and I think its kind of cool to see articles on music, southern life, hunting dogs, vacation spots all in one magazine. Check out their website it will give you a good idea of what it is like. Shooting sportsman also has a good site.

I had PDJ for many years, but as someone else mentioned it seemed I was re-reading the same articles over and over after a while. I primarily kept my subscription for the web forums - some great folks on that board.

How many of you subscribe to Upland Journal?

I get both Gun Dog and PDJ. Enjoy them both. The annual puppy picture edition of Gun Dog can sure put a smile on your face. I could do without Spaulding Hoffhacker though in PDJ. Total waste of magazine space and I think he is a terrible writer. I think there is a reason they save his column for the last page!

I like the two mag's about the same. But then, I like both pointing dogs and retrievers, and have trained spaniels as well. That's the nice thing about Gun Dog; diversified.

The big plus about PDJ is access to the forum.

I sold my large collection of Gun Dog and PDJ to a gentleman on this site. I just had no room to store them, and I couldn't throw them away.

His collection at this time only lacks PDJ NOV- DEC 2002.

If anyone coud help him it would be greatly appreciated.

Let me know, and I will put you in touch with him.

I get PDJ, and it's a good mag - but my other favorite is the RGS magazine. It's really gotten good lately, especially this year.

I prefer PDJ as well - as it is fairly informative and focused on pointing dogs. Another magazine I've enjoyed, but not seen mentioned here is the NAVHDA magazine. The NAVHDA magazine provides some diversity similar to GD.
