English Setter litter

Post by KellyM87 » Fri Jan 07, 2011 2:14 pm

looking for a male English Setter pup ready to go home sometime between July and the end of the year....

What we want is a dog with a really good pedigree, that we can run in walking field trials and cover dog trials. I do not want a 100% cover dog bred dog pup, I want something that is probably a mix between a coverdog line and a horseback dog line.

Anyone know who the great producing sires and dams out there are right now? who is producing a lot of champions? I know that just because a dog is a champion doesn't mean that is what he is producing, so anyone with insight let me know...

LOOk at Ben Garcia at hideaway kennels. I know looking there the other day if had some litters on his website. If has exactly the type of setter your looking for.

That opens your door to a lot of breeders. Here are a few very good ones, worth contacting and seeing what their breeding plans are. How about a started dog? If you truly want to get a trial dog right out of the gate, it is the best way to get one that will trial...a pup "may" not pan out (been there done that).

Dave Hughes has done both horseback and coverdog and he says that the difference between the two types of dogs is mostly the training. However, if it would make you happy, look for a cross between a good all age setter and a coverdog line. Hytest Kennel (setters unlimited) has done a few of those breedings. Many of the coverdog lines have horseback dogs back in the pedigrees.

One error in the above listing is that lloyd Murray has Long Gone Setters: http://www.longgonesetters.com/news.php

Doesn't Jerry Kolter of http://www.northwoodsbirddogs.com/ work use both types of setters in his breeding? When looking at his dog's pedigree there are definitely some horseback setters in there.

Take a look at Bruce Minard, Hifive Kennels in Michigan. www.hifivekennels.com

Also, Mary Beth Esser at Fireside Setters in Wisconsin. www.firesidesetters.com

Both have produced and successfully campainged some excellent setters. I attended a seminar that was put on by Bruce at Mary Beth's place. I have to say that I was quite impressed with their accomplishments.
You could live without a dog, but it would not be worthwhile.
