Springer Spaniel training books

Post by nikegundog » Mon Jan 24, 2011 2:16 pm

I've had labs for the last 20 plus years, just picked up a 6 month old springer. Its been probably 10 years since i picked up a training book. Any suggestions on books or dvd's? I've already been told Hup, and its on the way.

"Hup!"'s helpful, but catching up with a top-notch spanieler up there, of which there are several including Tony Roettger http://www.roettgerridge.com/ or Jason Givens next-door http://www.lighthousekennels.com/ , would be invaluable to your training.

Pam Kadlic's book, don't recall the name, do a Google. Having successfully trained Boykins, she understands the difference, and there is a difference.

I was I had the book before I trained my first Boykin, and I am sure he would have bought it himself, it would have saved us both a lot of stress.

I had been training pointers and retrievers for nearly 40 years when I got my first Boykin and thought dog training was all about the same, and it is, except that soft-tempered, hard-headed, intelligent part. The first time he shut down on me because I thought he knew and understood a command he didn't, I was stumped. Oh, I had dogs bow up and get stubborn often, but not like this. He just quit, wouldn't come to me, wouldn't retrieve, wouldn't look at me, wouldn't move. It was like, if you are going to punish me when I didn't do anything wrong, I am not going to do anything. It took almost a month for us to work through it, a month of lost training because I failed to read the dog properly.

It is a really good, well written book on a tough subject,
