I just got my homing pigeons and one pair is sitting on eggs already and another is on the nest. Do they usually hatch this early in the year or is it to early in the year. The birds were in the cold. Will the eggs hatch this early?

The eggs will usually hatch as long as both birds cock and hen sit on them and the eggs are fertile. The males will sit on the nest in the day and the hens sit at night.Pigeons don't just have a Spring laying season like gamebirds. They can breed and lay about anytime, but the breeding gets most stronger when the days are longer with more daylight. Most racers will put their birds under artificial light in Jan/Feb to bring the breeding cycle in early. Then the young birds will be ready to race in Sept whren the races start. Also by putting them under artificial light the hens will come down on eggs at the same time and hatch them about the same time. That way all your young birds are the same age and can be trained as a flock.

How old do you let your young birds get before you start using them for training?

When they are flying and come back into the loft through the bobs if you are using them. You will know when they are ready. I am just guessing but most could be ready by the time they are 2 months old.

I have several birds on nest, also have two babies that are feathered and out of the nest. We have had night temps. below zero and daytime in the teens.

My birds lay yr round but not quite as much in the winter. The winter eggs usually freeze so they don't hatch but ocassionaly a couple will hatch & make it.Just depends on the temps.

When I was in NY they would start laying in march-april.

Down here in La. They breed year round.

They will breed year round up here to if you give them a little extra light.

Ive got 4 nests hatched. 2 young hens that layed on the floor lost theirs, 2 sitting on eggs and three more pairs mated.

New to the site but trying to find some pigeons without trading chunks of gold for feathers.
