It depends on where you live and how cold it gets. For my neck of the woods we have several days of below zero temperature in the winter. That is why I built an insulated dog house. Here is a link that I based my dog house off of: http://tidewaterkc.org/projects/insulated_dog_house.htm

I will try and get some posts of my dog house if you would like.

I too like to build a insulated dog box but it gets windy here as well. I like to build the box so that there is a little hallway in the entrance then the dog turns 180 degrees and there is its sleeping place. Keeps the wind out and the heat in. Even thin hair dogs keep warm. We have a waterbed heater pad in ours because of the minus 40 weather we can have. Also it is low so it slides right under our deck taking up no room in the back yard.

If you look at the plans I posted it has a hallway for an entry. It is a must in cold windy weather.

Bruin,

Sorry I missed the part about a two dog house. I have a double built and a single fashioned after the plans but with a single pitched roof. The double is a beast to lift and it took 6 guys to move it. I oversized this one a bit. I would reccomend building 2 singles unless they will be there a long time.

Minus 40 :!:
And to think I feel bad about putting my dogs out in the morning on the rare days when it gets into the 30's.

Remember he is on Celsius and not Fahrenheit in Canada. Makes a big difference. But we get down rarely to - 30 here in northern Illinois and our dogs were always out in boxes.

Celsius -40 is the same temp as -40 fahrenheit. That is the temp where to two scales cross.

I built mine right into the side of my shed. The sides and top are double wall insulated with a removable 90* "hallway" on the outside. The top is hinged and lifts for access from the inside of the shed.

I built mine with the hallway on the side so that they entered the sleeping portion at the back corner. Then I hinged the front of the sleeping area so I could clean it easily and also prop the front up in the summer so there was an open shaded area where the dogs could lay on the cool cement or they could lay in the open house if they wanted. I loved the ease of just sweeping or scraping the bedding out with out having to lift it out from the top.

Try it, you will like it.
