New Setter Pup- Which one??
Hi Guys. This is really just an excuse to make my first post. I am looking forward to my new Llewellin pup after 10 years of being out of pointing dog ownership. I have first male pick of a great litter of 5 males/3 females. These are mostly from Lynnhill, Blizzard and Bondhu lines. Thought you guys may get a kick out of the pictures that the breeder sent me. Heres 3 of the males. (tried to show five- but didn't work) One of these guys is coming home with me...
Beautiful pups with great parents. They will be ready for pick up mid April (these pics are at about 3 weeks of age). I'm looking forward to getting back into serious grouse and pheasant hunting and learning from this board.

Beautiful pup....how old is he in that pic? The ticking is really going to be fun to watch on these pups over the next few weeks. There are two male "patch dogs" in the litter. I cant really go wrong on any of em....thanks for the welcomes.

I would wait another 2 or 3 weeks before you decide.

Re: New Setter Pup- Which one??
Like I stated at the outset of this post- just an excuse to post puppy pics and I'm really- really bored with 2 days of rain and now snowing sideways. I really don't care about color. I will be visiting these guys in 2 or 3 weeks to make my pick. Then returning to pick him up in mid April. I'll be looking at personality and which one strikes our fancy then.
Re: New Setter Pup- Which one??
I think its like alot of us when we choose a litter based on the breed, then pedigree, then for what venue/purpose we intend on getting the dog for, the next step is looks..im sure highlander already picked the litter for a particular reason and next is to pick the color and personality of the pup..sorry to speak for you highlander but i thought the answer was obvious....ruthBoJack wrote:#3,But Color doesn't make the Dog.You're picking for just color and markings?

i like No. 5. He looks like he's smart enough to find the dinner bowl.
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

I am pretty useless with this. Check the lineage and the parents and then get the one that seems to like you and disregard the color. Waiting a few weeks might help you out a bit. Like I said I am useless here. They all pull at the strings.
I'd rather live on the side of a mountain, than wander through canyons of concrete and steel.

Re: New Setter Pup- Which one??
Great looking pups. My strategy is to let the breeder match me up with the right pup. I figure the chances are pretty high that you "bond" with a pup the minute you get to the litter and if you'd come an hour earlier or an hour later, it would have been a different puppy. A one time or even a two time visit to the breeder is pretty worthless IMO. The breeder interacts with the litter multiple times every day for 8 weeks and should have a very good grasp on what he's producing. If he has a very good idea of what you're looking for ... he can steer you in the direction of maybe a pair that you could choose between. For my Vizsla, I would have chosen a different pup than I ended up getting ---- and it would have been the wrong dog for me. He went to a family home and did not have near as much drive as my dog does, but he's a great dog for the family he went to. Mine would have been a bit headstrong and high energy for a family with small kids - but he's been perfect for me. Just visit with the breeder quite a bit and be clear of what you're wanting in the pup - he can likely narrow it down for you but still leave you a choice between two or more.

Roostersmom,
I do believe this gentlemen has already done what you advise and his pick is down to these particular pups as his choice.

The orange one is the way to go. Just can't beat that color.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.
