Do all game birds smell the same?

Post by gripper39 » Mon Mar 21, 2011 4:45 pm

I was just wondering about the smell of game birds do they all smell the same and do they smell different than regular songbirds? My dog mainly hunts pheasants and quail but I have used chukar to train him and at the hunt club he has pointed partridge. Why would a pigeon smell different than a songbird or would a dog point a songbird if it was planted in the grass? I don't know just something that I was wondering about.

The dogs can definitely tell the difference. I have always wondered how dogs keyed onto game bird scent more than non-game bird scent and when this distinction happened. Humans, after all, decide what is a game bird. Can a woodcock smell THAT different from a robin? We raise chickens, and my dog has no interest in them, but will follow you through heck for a cage-raised pheasant. Go figure.

I raised pheasants, chukar and quail for a few years and I can tell you that the smell is very distinctly different. So if the human nose can tell a difference, I would think a dogs nose would detect the difference.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Unless someone makes a descented bird feed to feed them :) hmmm could this be a new marketable item? :)

I had a dog once that only pointed male pheasants. Made me a few bucks with her on that.

For seventy years I have heard a lot of people that had one that only pointed cocks but no one ever has one. Wonder why? Must have disappeared due to poor breeding.
