TWO DOGS???

Post by jlowery » Mon Apr 04, 2011 2:09 pm

FOR FUTURE INFORMATION: I have been reading about how hunters run two dogs in the upland fields, some good, some bad. Anyone have any thoughts on running two dogs on pheasants. I now own a Britt and Setter, and really want some ideas on how i should run them. I know that as i work with the new pup i will see how he ranges, and how my britt may or may not compete with him. Just wanted some life lessons from who all has been there done that. If i should work them seperatly? Work them together? Or just feel them out as the training goes. My Britt could not be any better in the field, and was a joy for everyone to hunt with. They seem to have really bonded, and it has been great to see them play all day with each other, just what i needed in the family.

As for training them, the Britt is well further along, and i know that the setter will only learn from him. Right now, i spend 30 min with each dog during the week and a few hours of training and playing on the weekend. If has been a blast. This post is just strictly what i need to have in mind for future hunting...

2 shorthairs, they cover more ground and have ya ever done a double? Both dogs on point, 2 birds get up 2 shots both dogs bring you the bird, guy watching shakes his head and mumbles something.. :) I did this to my brother one year he came back from California. 2 months later I moved him into his new house here in Omaha :)

I love them doubles :) Dad did a triple once.

We usually run 2 (or more dogs) together.

They do learn a lot from each other. Mostly stuff that you don't want either of them to know.
I have English Pointers because they don't ever grow up either...

I never run less than 2 dogs at once. Usually I run 3.

2 dogs is the way to go! Twice the noses.

I like to hunt two dogs together, but I work a young dog alone until he develops his independence and confidence.

I would suggest you give the young dog at least equal time alone as you do running him with Red, he will needs to learn to hunt independently and will learn to do that by running him alone. Sometimes puppies will get the bad habit of "trailing" an older dog, not always but its better to avoid than to try and correct. Once he gets a little age and figures the game by out, by all means cut those rascals loose to together!

Two broke dogs, my bad. A youngster needs his time alone in the field.

We carry four to eight to the field and run two at a time...fresh dogs hit the field about every 2 hours.
