In search of Grouse woods

Post by ROTTnBRITT » Tue Apr 12, 2011 8:17 am

Living in here is bradford county PA finding hunting grounds is nearly impossible. Most of the land is private and all the land owner are all about Deer Hunting. Not to many land owners want you taking your dog through there property in seach of game birds, especially during the deer hunting season. I think I will have to head for the mountain to find spots on state game lands.
Not really interested in hunting the pheasants that are released 3 times a year and having to deal with the crowd that comes with it. It would really be nice to see some efforts in bringing back the bobwhites. But like is said. Its all about the deer here.

What should I be looking for in finding good grouse cover and food sources? Aspens, pines and berries and is there more?

ROTTnBRITT,

Food sources are key, however you can also work on finding early succesional habitat. People to contact include PGC, state forestry folks, and local forestry consultants / loggers . Google earth can also be useful in locating clearcuts. Northwind Enterprises publish some some pretty good maps. Their bradford county map says it identifies 36 clear cuts with 1080 acres of clear cuts- http://northwindenterprises.goestores.c ... tID=226001. Luckily you have a lot of time between now and October to spend ample time in the woods.

I had some great days on state game lands up north this year. A buddy and I hunted Potter and Tioga counties and our flush rate was a little under 3 per hour all on public land. Search the PA Game Commission website for game lands in your area and you should find some birds. You can start scouting now and listen for birds drumming.

Aren't you close to the allegany national forest? I have hunted both sides (PA and more in NY) and have had luck finding birds both places. Porcupine country.

I started hunting allegheny last year. If you get around that way I'd be glad to show you around the places I've found so far.

The Ruffed Grouse Society is based in Coraoplis, PA. They should be able to help hook you up with a chapter near you.
