EHV-1 in Western States

Post by Cajun Casey » Thu May 19, 2011 1:21 pm

This is not really a horse specific topic, since it affects travel and interstate transport. Thought the trial folks might want to see the latest. Looks like Utah is the hotspot, right now. Good information and links here.

The outbreak appears to be centered around horses that went to the big NCHA cutting in Utah. A great many of the horse events in the effected states have been cancelled or postponed for at least the next couple of weeks.

I personally would not let my horses off my property or any new animals on until the outbreak is contained. I know several horses so far have had to be euthanized because of the severity of the disease.

Yup. We lost a bunch of money here from the cancellation of a roping event, actually the next on the circuit behind the one where the outbreak started. Sad deal.

Open the link I posted, look down at the bottom and you will see a title for 5 Things You Need To Know. From that information, I'd say a farrier could spread it via tools.
