Style Question... For Everyone

Post by Ron R » Wed May 25, 2011 11:29 am

A dog's style is in the eye of the beholder...so what I'm asking for is some picks of what you all consider style.

I will start with two variations, one low and one high.

I have already expressed my feelings about a dog staring at the moon when we are hunting so I guess you know which of those dogs impress me. Love the intensity of the dog eyes saying the bird is right there.

The whole situation needs to be taken into consideration...weather, stance, eyes, location, wind, tail set, etc.

I will play along. First off, your pictures are poor examples I will have to ask that you revise them. The second dog is clearly the recepient of a gentle breeze to work into while the first dog is pointing birds and worrying about the impending attack of a catfish or gator.

In seriousness, I see no difference there. Both dogs are intent and while the second has much more classic crank, the first dog is pointing a ways out with head reasonably up real nice tail position and looks like it may be in that position because it hit that bird hard, note the flopped back ears.

I believe that a high head and tail show intensity from solid genetics and solid training practices that do not hinder natural ability. When I see a long tail or a stub with a swiveling head or low tail, I first think training pressure and then secondly look at genetics. The first in my opinion is the most common while the second exists. I know a brittany all age on a pros string that wins a few trials by deafault but has a cruddy tail, the dog never gets bred and no amount or variation of training effects it...but back to your two pictures, I would put either dog up. It would take something else in their run to make a difference for me.

The dog in the first pic has one of the most intense looks I have ever seen on point!!!! Kinda reminds me of a dog that bit me once, that would be right before the bite, and it was not a gun dog breed!

Don't think I ever seen a point I didn't like. I love the fact that all individual dogs are a little bit different and all have their own style. I'd take either dog. :D

I love seeing the pictures and making suppositions.
In the photos Ruth posted I see Jersey being a puppy...unsure about everything and giving strong consideration to catching that bird, on the other hand Jake has set up pretty well. His bird is out there far enough that it doesn't appear to be too much temptation for a young dog, shoot him that bird and quit the session....

I think in determining style we might also consider how the dog goes on point and not just how they look while on point. For me, I like a dog that screeches to a stop after winding a bird by digging their claws in the ground. Slamming on point and then holding steady in whatever position the dog is in. Sometimes the dog winds a bird far enough away to cause them to "work the bird" until they get close enough to finally go on point, but I sure like a hard stop then a hard point. I like it when my dog's body is at a 90 degree angle with there head pointed toward the bird and their lower body pointing the way they were running. In the end style is a product of birdiness. A bird crazy dog will have style on point because they're intense. A dog that like birds but doesn't love them will have less style then a dog that lives to find birds. Just MO.

I always liked this dog - he died too young and his sire was too old :| I couldn't carry on the breeding.

IMO it is too bad this influence seems to be watering down in the breed. (a cousin)

I do not trial, therefore my stance on style is any way my dog points! I understand some people must have 12oclock tail, but I simply love a solid intense point no matter where the dogs tail is!! That imo, and understand everyone does not agree!

Don't really care how high or low they are as long as they are pointing the bird so I have an idea where it is and doing it intensely. Yeah I do like that better but it is still high which is nice.

Slammed on the breaks and adjusts head height for the length of point. Gives the handler an idea of how far they are going to have to walk. Won't buy a GSP who's tail was hacked too short.

Like what you will, it was funny to me, that someone (Ezzy  ) wouldn't know where the bird is if the dog has his head held high. Beyond that everyone is free to like what they want.....funny this comes up everytime a picture is shown with head cranked.

Ezzy gave his opinion and I gave mine....... Nothing more than that. Better :?:

Love the anti head crank bias, gotta be the silliest one yet

Crank is a result of intensity.
I know we have had this discussion before and you and I disagree but there is no right or wrong answer, since it is a matter of preference and perception. So, my opinion is that the head crank is not a result of intensity, but rather shows no intensity at all. It just looks like they are posing for a picture to me. It is not a bias and it is not silly, it is just the way I see it. Just because somebody disagrees with you doesn't mean they are biased or silly. I respect your opinion, I just have a different one.

Ron, you already know which one of your two pictures I will choose. Naturally, for me, the first one does it!! I like a dog that is looking in the direction of the bird and looks like he is about to explode at any time with excitement and intensity, which that one does. :D

The mama, who kicked some major butt (first place out of 20 dogs) in an AF Am. Shooting Dog earlier this month gave her style to one of her daughters.

As much as I like the above brittanies to me this picture is almost perfect to my eyes. I came up on my setter while running on grouse this spring from well over 100 yards (Garmin Astro) in a thick scrub/shrub wetland and saw this.

Image

This is another nice point on a woodcock to my, but I prefer the previous picture more because of the higher head and the slightly straighter tail.

Diversity in bird dogs is a great thing. If we all had the same preferences, we would all have the same breed, they would all look alike and they would all look pretty much the same on point. It would be pretty boring IMO.

Charlie have you ever seen a dog that holds its head that way hit a bird in person ?

Just wondering? Because you say it shows no intensity just looks like a pose.....

To me that is clearly straight opinion and doesn't sound like you've ever seen a dog that does it....

I didn't mean to start a big debate I just made a comment on top of a comment in jest originally....
The second kick from a mule is of very little educational value - from Wing and Shot.

Yes, I have seen it many times. That is why I have the opinion I do. I am not debating you, I just have a different preference. If that is what turned me on, that is what I would have. You just simply cannot change a person's mind on what he or she prefers or doesn't prefer and I am not trying to.

Right on Joe, and Ron and I both know what the other one prefers and we have no problem with it. We both still admire and respect the other one's dogs.
