Gunther's morning Quail walk

Post by JessiNGunther » Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:43 am

I'm lucky enough to be out in the middle of no where and have a small ranch so every morning The dogs and i walk up to the barn to feed the animals . I get a nice walk the dogs get to chase birds it's a win win i think.
I just wish Gunther would Hold point longer than he does but i'm sure with time this will happen.
Part of their play ground there are quail trails running all over.

Is nesting season over? I would never let my dog run on wild birds during nesting season. Too much stress on the birds.

Yes it is . From everything i have saw on my land and what I have read is nesting starts after the summer monsoon season. We have yet to have any rain :( All the photos where taken right out my front door right out in my yard so thats where my dogs play . Ever try and keep a GSP in a house all day nothing good comes of it. I do not let the dog run wild because I do know on the other end of the property down in a wash there are nest so no one goes down there.

Jessi you just gotta ignore the haters on this site. Everyone is an expert especially those that live in a big city and try to tell people who live in areas with wild birds how we oughta do things. Just tell them to put down the hatorade and move outta haterville. Nice pics anyway. :D

I know the downside also.... boots can be very useful and if you get the dog used to them early they don't pay attention to them when you are hunting.

Quail have already nested down here and the chicks are flying missile's. Just driving into the hunt club today I saw around 50-75 chicks.

I should have specified they were valley quail. Gables and scales I think nest around summer time. My friends dog retrieved a few babies last year that he didnt shoot (az). What quail do you have over there?

That last picture looks just like mine pointing through the curtains......only it's not dove/quail, it's rabbits/ground squirrels!!! These guys only have two modes.....sleep and prey detection!

Gun is up at 5:30 has his breakfast by the slider and then stands there pointing. on any given day there are 5 rabbits and a million ground squirrels I swear they hit the jackpot on babies this year. Oh and then there is the lizzards....... then the quail and doves come in. The poor boy don't know what to point at first LOL great entertainment with my morning coffee

Gun is up at 5:30
Mine wakes me up at that time every morning :) even if I take her out at 1:00am. No sleeping in at my place....
