Post by JoePaTurfShoes » Fri Jul 01, 2011 1:22 am

So looking to purchase a shotgun to hunt Pheasant and Qual.

I have only used shotguns to hunt turkey and self defense. Any suggestions are appreciated!

This is really a prefrence issue. Not everyone can shoot the same gun well. I grew up with a winchester 1300 pump in my hands shooting doves (the F15 of the birds I hunt) and to this day I have never been as accurate with a SxS or O/U. Never been fitted either. My guess is that the 1300 just fit me at the time. Today i no longer own the pump, it was stolen out of my dad truck some years ago. It has been replaced by a Rem 870 special field which is a solid little gun. I do hope to own a fine SxS soon that I can fit to me. I like the sight plane they offer.

As far as gauge is concerned, that, to a great extent depends on what you are hunting and how.

If you are going to do all your shooting over points, then a 20 ga is plenty for any kind of pheasants or any kind of quail. If the vast majority of your pheasant hunting is stocked birds, again a 20 ga. is plenty. I hunted stocked birds for many years over pointing dogs and never needed more than a 20 ga and i am a mediocre shot. If you are a good shot, a 28 ga. is probably plenty over pointing dogs and most game. If not, then for wild pheasants or some species of wild quail might want more gun, as in a 12 Ga.

As far as which gun, a Remington 870 pump is hard to beat for value. The Franchi mentioned abouve is indeed light as a feather. The Beretta auto is also a very good gun. For carrying in the field the Franchi is very hard to beat. The down side of that is that the gun does not have the barrel weight to swing through as an O/U or SXS will. If you point and shoot, an autoloader or pump is a very good choice.

Get a gun that fits you and fits what you do with it. I spent a couple extra bucks and got Kick-Eez sporting clays pads put on my shotgun, not for the recoil so much, but so it would not hang up on clothing during mounting.

I would say that its most dependant on what your budget is. They aren't giving away new shotguns these days.
I can't believe how expensive the "less expensive" guns have gotten. As far as gauge, as already mentioned it depends on what you mainly hunt. I shoot a 12 because I shoot Roosters almost all the time.

With a shot gun, its hard to recommend as the gun needs to "fit" right for you to shoot it well. And there is price range. Myself, I shoot a Browning Citori 525 field. I love it. If you are gonna hunt roosters, get a 12 gauge IMO. I wish I could afford another one in 20 gauge, but I cant, so I have an 870 20 gauge for ruffies.

I have always heard great things about the remington 1100 for a semi and the real 870 wingmaster in any gauge. I also see a lot of folks using them 390 and 391s they are lightweight. I also have a 11-87 light contour is very easy to shoot. Ithaca made a great pump if you can find em, last one I got was 200.

Lots of different guns out there, maybe you can find a trap place some will let you try theirs out and go from there.

Remington makes some real fine guns at a real reasonable price. I started out shooting a 870 express magnum pump. I killed ALOT of geese and ducks with that gun. :D Ahhhhh the memories.

I also bought a 1100 Mag out of a pawnshop one day only because I got a sweet deal on it and it was in near mint condition. It had the vent rib, but fixed Modified choke. It was a really nice gun to shoot. I even bought the stainless recoil gas operating kit for it. 1100 is a real nice gun and you can usually find them pretty reasonable used. :D

The only reason I could afford that gun, was because I traded in a deer rifle for a grand, and then sold a litter of pups to pay for the rest! She is a dandy though! Sexy and Italian... Just like I like my women!
