Boykin Spaniels and Reputable Breeders

Post by JoePaTurfShoes » Fri Jul 01, 2011 8:16 am

So I am researching a lot of Spaniels and find very little in the Boykin Spaniel arena.

Does anyone know of high quality breeders/trainers out there?

I am committed to spending the money for a quality dog that is trained for upland game birds and am researching all options.

McBosco's on the case! You also might try, north of the Mason-Dixon Line, these folks, http://www.brandywinecreekboykins.com/, especially for upland work, or call the Boykin Spaniel Society http://www.boykinspaniel.org/ for available registered litters, and certainly shout out somebody who goes by "esylivin" on the duckhunting forum (http://www.duckhuntingchat.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=11), who has an esteemed Boykin that's siring a number of litters after having claimed the Grand Hunting Retriever Champion title as an owner-handled dog a few months ago.

Or you could keep widening your spaniel search - or maybe that should be lengthening it -

by looking at ye olde Sussex, the sturdiest of all the spaniels.

I have been around two others, both trained as flusher/retrievers.

I have a question about the Boykins, I have been considering adding a flusher to the pack based on the fact that we now hunt pheasants about 90% of the time, the other 10% is waterfowl. I have considered a lab of course, a cocker and springer, and a Boykin. What has always turned me off about the Boykins is the coat I see on some of them, some look like an irish water spaniel... and I want no part of that. Can you tell as a puppy if they will have more or less coat? When I was in terriers you could tell the pups out of the litter that would have more coat and which ones would have less. Now you couldnt tell how much more and how much was less at that point but you could see the difference.

Coop quit your whining about real dogs with fur coats, unlike your naked hounds

Sal when I had my Jagds and Jacks we hunted what we could find, all my terriers swam and retrieved. Of course none had a soft mouth!

You know you asked about the Boykin coats.

I would bet many of the Boykins look like Rosanna Rosanna Danna because they get shaved in summertime. My buddy at work has inlaws that have two and they shave them short in summer and the coat grows back like a fright wig.

Not really, Mc. Not a good idea to shave any gundog

and also Boykins have a wide range of coats, this

is a marcel (wavy) in 95+ heat. No problem. They do hail from South Carolina, and hie on for doves in the hottest heat.
