I really want to thank Grant for doing all the work for this again. These new pheasant training dummies from Armadillo Foam are really sweet, you can find a link to them over at The Checkcord, they make a nice selection of foam gun dog training aids.
Best of luck to everyone in this photo contest!

Yeah Casper, that's the one. It is listed under the Album (click link above on the green bar) as the "April 2006 Contest"

Good to see someone win that needs the money. Will you tell us what all you are planning on doing with it? You know like give half to charity and then maybe buy a new house or car. Congrats if you win it 12 volt.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Here is what I have as winners. Battery Man can only win once =), so Ayres comes in second. FWIW, I removed the votes of members who registered and voted under two usernames. Winners should contact Catfishsteve at http://www.thecheckcord.com
Thanks everyone, and a big thanks to www.thecheckcord.com for making this contest possible!

Sweet! My dog has been working solely on quail until hunt testing is over but I do plan on taking him out pheasant hunting this year with my dad and grandpa. This might be just the ticket to get him used to retrieving a larger bird.
Thanks for putting on another contest Grant, and thanks to The Checkcord for sponsoring this one!

I got mine today. After a little sniffing and then some encouragement about what he was supposed to do with it, my dog retrieves it to hand. It's actually a lot heavier than I thought it would be, which is a good thing because I really wanted to simulate an actual pheasant. Justus hasn't retrieved anything that big before now, what with our working strictly with quail until after the hunt test runnings are over, so this will be a great transition to retrieving larger birds. I'm hoping to finish the MH title this fall and have him ready to go for pheasant season.
Thanks Grant for hosting the contest, and Steve for providing the prizes. This one is being put to use for sure!

Ayres,
They're great dummies but one thing I found which may be detrimental is the black plastic ball at the end of the string. Occassionally, as my dog was coming back with it, it would start to swing up and bonk her in the head or on the snout. You don't want that to be anything perceived as negative on a nice retrieve. It's held on by a knot and I took mine off. The Dokken dummies just have a not at the end of the string and don't swing around in the dogs face.
Just a bit of advice, take it as you wish.

Well Justus grabbed it by the head the first time and almost dragged it to me but it fell out of his mouth. Then he did the big boy thing and just opened wide and grabbed it by the midsection. Vizslas are still smallish dogs, and Justus is just over 50 lbs., so he doesn't really swing it or shake it... just holds his head up and runs it right to me.
He's got retrieving down so I'm sure that if he did shake it and the ball bonked him he'd just learn to not shake it.

Right, but a knot (I meant to say KNOT, but it came out "not" ) at the end allows you to throw it just the same. The weight of the dummy itself propels it, not the black ball.gundogguru wrote:That black ball is there so it can be thrown farther. Never had any peoblems with them. they learn not to pick them up by the end.
It wasn't hitting her in the face/head when she shook it (she's a master level dog and we don't do that ) it was just the momentum of her return causing it to swing like a pendulum and hitting her in the face.
Like I said, it was just a bit of advice from my experience using them. I have all of the Armadillo foam products as well as a couple Dokkens. Dokkens are more like the real thing and don't have the balls (but do have knots) at the end of the throwing string.
Experience and learn from those experiences.
