Started English Setter Available

Post by nj gsp » Sat Aug 27, 2011 6:08 pm

Hi Folks,

I have a started English Setter that is available – my wife is fighting cancer and we just can’t keep him. So I’d like to find him a good home.

Buddy is a rescue, approximately 16 months old, and does not have a pedigree. I had him neutered and his dew claws removed. He trained this summer with a pro NAVHDA trainer in upstate NY. Buddy is obedience trained (sit, stay, whoa, come) stops to flush, steady to wing and shot, force fetch trained , marks well, and retrieves to hand from land and water (he loves to swim!). His point is not very good at the moment but there is nothing wrong with his nose and he is improving every day. Once he has a hunting season behind him, and especially if he gets some experience on wild birds like grouse and woodcock, I believe he could turn out to be a top notch hunting dog. He is housebroken and is good in the house or in a kennel, although he is a people person and very affectionate.

Please let me know if you are interested and would like more information.

Thanks!

I wish you were closer we'd offer to foster him for you. My wife battled lymphoma but was declared in remission this past January 2011 after three years of treatment. We'll pray for your wife and family.

Good luck to your wife, let me talk to my wife and see if we are in the market for another dog. We have talked but getting another, (we have a 18 month old English Setter, named Jake) Your dog sounds alot like our Jake.

BTW - where was he rescued from ? (a rescue organization) ?

I found him back in December while bird hunting. He had been intentionally abandoned had been running loose for 1-2 weeks. I tried to get him into a setter rescue program but they couldn't take him, so I ended up keeping him. My wife is more important to me than any dog and she just can't handle him right now, so as much as it saddens me to let him go there's no other choice.

White dogs - whoa!

Sometimes he points like this - but usually not. It CAN look like this, and I believe he will get there:

His first summer hair cut - he did not like the clippers at first but he's cool with them now (mostly):

Cooling off with a friend:

Send me a PM if you want to meet him!

I have no idea how he is with kids. I don't think he's ever been around any. I've got a lot of money in this dog, and I'd really prefer to see him go to a home where he would be trained and hunted. I'll place him as a pet as a last priority.

Fair enough, good luck.

nj gsp, I'm sorry to hear of your wife's illness. You both will be in my prayers.

I think this is a beautiful ES. Someone should really pick him up.

Thanks everyone who has contacted me about Buddy, and also thanks to everyone who has reached out with kind thoughts and prayers for my wife. That means a lot to us.

I have a few people so far who have offered to take the dog, and I think I've found him a good home. I won't know for sure until next week, so if anyone else is interested please send a PM.

Thanks again everyone!

You must be going through such a hard time, and to have to give up a dog to battle through it must be very hard. I hope all goes well and you and your wife can work on another setter some day soon.

This dog is still available - I'd like him to go to a home where he can continue his field training. This young dog loves to hunt and proved it with some positive experiences on wild birds in Maine - he had several finds on grouse. He is still very much a puppy at about 1-1/2 years old. Because he was abused and mistreated so badly before being abandoned he needs someone with a firm but gentle hand and a kind heart. Please let me know if interested!

Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your situation. Wish you lived closer, I'd just keep him for you. Maybe someday you could have him back. I did that with a friend and had his GSP over a year before he could take him back. Good luck.
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!
