Pedigree German Shot Hair
Pedigree German Shot Hair
How are you able to determined a dogs pedigree ? I am looking to purchase a German Short Hair pup, but I have no idea what to look for in this breed. What is a good line to look for in the German Shot Hair breed. I am also looking for a pup to hunt with. There are so many breeders out there it hard to find a good one. Any suggestions would be helpful
Thanks Pat

Re: Pedigree German Shot Hair
There definately are a lot of GSPs out there. As far as finding a good one goes, there are a lot of them too.
The first thing you need to determine is what you want in a hunting dog. All breeds have dogs that work on the edge of shotgun range as well as dogs that will work at the edge of a zip code.
Look for a specific venue that tests or judges dogs to a level or standard you are comfortable with and start there.

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.

Pat,
In California all you need to do is contact Craig Smith, up in Tracy 209-481-4640.
Craig is and excellent GSP trainer and breeder.

Re: Pedigree German Shot Hair
I'm agree with Jimbo. You better do some research on the pups you are looking at. If you are a foot hunter you may not want a dog whos lines are from horseback stock. They will tell you that you can always reel one in closer but can't make them hunt farther than natural but I can tell you it can be a constant battle keeping one of those big runners reeled in. If that is not your style it will turn you off in a hurry. Same goes for a close worker if you are hunting big wide open country maybe even off horseback. You really need to decide what "you" will be doing with it and not let someone else make up your mind. Doesn't matter how great a dog is for someone else if it doesn't fit your style you won't be totally satisfied.Don't be hurried into a decision. Take your time and do some research. If you plan to run some trials go to some and see some dogs and look for qualities you like.

+1! That is exactly the point I was making in a couple of other threads.smoothbean wrote:I'm agree with Jimbo. You better do some research on the pups you are looking at. Re: Pedigree German Shot Hair
Thanks for all the info. I do understand that I want a short hair that will work close range for me. Thanks for the info on the Merle kennel here in Bakersfield, I will be giving him a call tomorrow. He has been in the business for a long time. Not only that but I live here in Bakersfield. There are some more breeders up North that I am going to check into. I do have some work to do. My first dog that I purchased was the best dog that I have ever own. I just don't know if I will ever be able to replace him. I have owned two dogs since then and they both don't even come close. I always try to get a better dog but I just came to the conclusion that all dogs are different and some are just much better than others. Thanks again for all the info, I got some homework to do and some calls to make.

PM Sent, and remember, you can always hold a dog from trial lines back with an E-Collar. Also, check out what David Dyal has in his kennel in Texas. http://bluemountainpreserve.com/Pappy wrote:Thanks for all the info.
