speaking of GSP color...

Anyone have a picture of a lemon and white GSP? I have heard of GSP's with a certain gene that will throw the color. The dogs usually won't be seen but wondering if there are some out there...

Search the forum, there have been lots of pics and discussion in the past.
The "Gene" you refer to would be the "e" at the E Locus, instead of the "E" that GSP's carry. The Pointer carries the "e" for yellow.

Just some quick reference info that may be helpful to you:

One of your dogs ancestors has thrown pups of that color.

Yep, sure enough and when lined on him, the smart ones that know it will do the Vetgen Test for coat color, or I believe there is also another similar Test from another outfit also available.

How many generations can the "e" still come through? 2,5,10?

Probably more. It can travel for generations and never express until it pairs with another carrier.

Yep, it's recessive and needs a matching "e" to express as said above.

It is passed on like other genetic markers, and two carriers just need to be lined up for it possibly express.

That's exactly what I heard... its interesting how it comes out when you talk to people that have dogs from the same lines. The lemon and whites dont look like a pointer as much as you would think. Actually less then some liver and white GSP's. It's good stuff to know...

Thanks for the pics. I Googled that shiznit and couldn't find any...

That off color bitch is out of breeding going to young Slick at least one way if she's a Texas dog called Sandy.

I found this site among others who are crossing labs and shorthairs as "hybrids" (read the bottom of the page) so i was wondering, is it possible if you then take one of those pups in that hybrid litter and breed it back to a GSP wouldnt you possibly get a lemon shorthair?? the reason i ask is if you click on the LITTERS link, on that site and have a look you will see pups that look like the pic i posted earlier.. posted on the first link here is an example of a yellow lab/shorthair mix from that site, posted under it is the actual site, notice the mask and lemon color?? i dont know genetics in dogs all that well but it sure is interesting.. do they DNA test these lemon dogs at all to see if they are pure?? interesting....ruth

Is lemon and white a DQ across the board or are there some games you can play and some you can't like with the black dogs?

I guess if GSP doesn't carry the e gene then obviously something is a little off in the woodpile.

Any color can play any game except showring.
Its about the money, not the breed.
These colors are being bred and registered as GSPs.
Claimed to be a throwback from the old days.
Maybe we'll begin to see brindle GSPs.

I'm thinking this color is produced a little more then some think, but they don't make it....... at least it keeps people from breeding them and producing a rare color.

Most color threads do turn ugly lol....

There was an add that I think one of those pups that I posted came from, it was on gundogsonline, listed lemon and white pups as "rare". Later the owner of the litter was attempting to sell the stud and advertised he through lemon as a positive... puke

Ok so how does this work. If dad was a "e" carrier and mom was a "E" carrier then no lemon/white dogs. How many pups will carry the "e" ? 50%?

Dad is Ee, Mom is EE, 50% of pups should be Ee.

Do all EP's carry Ee?
Sorry, I know next to nothing about genetics.
