Lone Star Opener

Post by skeetermc » Fri Dec 02, 2011 6:34 pm

Texas Pheasant opener in the morning. My girls are in their kennels dreaming of rochus roosters and never ending fields.
My gear is piled neatly in the man cave and the coffee is ready to brew. This drought has had its way with the bird population and that is fact, but if was only about shooting birds I would have given up the chase along time ago. So I say Happy Hunting to all my fellow bird chasing bretheren in the Lone Star state.

Early scouting I've seen sux for phez. Good luck to you, though. At least you're hunting in Texas, right? ;)
Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

Good luck fellas. I live in Texhoma about 100 miles north of Amarillo. I have been running dogs all summer here in the Oklahoma panhandle around Goodwell and Texhoma and have seen very very few pheasant and even fewer quail.

Birds were few and far between in the area we hunted.

Saw 4 roosters and one hen west of Dumas. Sad year. I feel sorry for my dogs.

I went out yesterday and walked 2 huge CRP fields for pheasant and only saw one hen where I usually see at least 20 or more birds between the 2 fields and then went quail hunting where I usually get into a least a covey of bobs and a couple coveys of blues and saw absolutely no quail.

I did have a great time with my Dad, brother, and two cousins. I haven't laughed so much in a a long time. We also had some super nice pieces of dog work on some of the few birds we did find.
