Favorite Bird Dog Magazine?

Post by daniel77 » Mon Dec 12, 2011 8:18 am

I'm looking for a Christmas gift for my father in law, and thought that a bird dog magazine would provide him some entertainment. I don't get any of these mags myself, so I'm not sure what crowd they cater to. My FIL loves to watch bird dogs work in general, and has only hunted quail so far, though I hope to make a pheasant hunt with him and my son in the upcoming years. He's had an ESS before and still likes the flushers, but is also fairly interested in and appreciative of my pointing dogs. He'd have no interest in field trial stuff, more on the line of hunting quail and in the field type stuff. Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'll also add that if there's a good quail hunting mag that includes articles on related stuff (land, dogs, guns, gear, etc.) then this may well fit the bill as well. Thanks again.

A membership to Quail Forever includes their quarterly journal. :D

My personal favorite is Pointing Dog Journal. However since your father in law has a broader interest, I would suggest Gun Dog. It covers pointing dogs, flushers and retrievers, as well as articles on bird hunting, shotguns, etc. A year subscription is $25.
You could live without a dog, but it would not be worthwhile.

My vote would be Gun Dog since he is interested in more than just pointing dogs.

I second the Quail Forever Journal - he'll enjoy the articles on habitat management, new gun testing and CRP. At least I think he would (I do). www.quailforever.org - join online and you get some special doodad you could send him with his new membership card.

I get PDJ, and also have really been enjoying the RGS magazine. The issues over the last year or so have been exceptional. I also would recommend Field Trial Magazine - I really liked my first issue. Hopefully that one will keep going, there was a post about that not too long ago.

I keep hearing about the age of printed matter coming to an end, but there is something about holding the pages in your hand that an iPad, Kindle, Nook, or whatever just can't duplicate. The best part is a magazine doesn't need batteries!
