Puppy and fireworks
Puppy and fireworks
Quick question, my pup is about 7 months old and has been gun trained/hunting for almost 3 months now. No problems at all with gun shots (which is pretty big accomplishment as he is a timid dog to begin with) How concerned should I be about the DA neighbors setting off fireworks and scaring him on New Years Eve?
Re: Puppy and fireworks
If he is a house dog, I wouldn't be too concerned. If he is outdoors , you might try to make arrangements to bring him in the house. My feeling is that there is certainly a difference between gunfire and fireworks.

Mine was 10 months old her first July 4th. Had been around gunfire before.
When the fireworks went off, she was looking for something to retrieve.

Re: Puppy and fireworks
Fireworks can have a pretty negative effect on some dogs. just depends, we usually crate ours in the garage if we think people will be shooting them.

Why take chances---crate it up in the basement to be safe

One more for in the house. A dog we had years ago was scared to death of thunder storms and fireworks. She was an insdie dog and we had to give her tranqulizers anyway. Guns didn't bother her a bit.
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

When that happens my dogs are in my neighbor's yard in about 2 seconds. They're not broke to wing and shot!
Re: Puppy and fireworks
My pup was 7 months old this past 4th of July and she had previously been introduced to guns. My neighbor was lighting off some very large fireworks on the 4th. Two weeks after the 4th I took her out for some training and when I fired the gun she stopped dead in her tracks and came back to me. She wanted nothing to do with birds when that gun went off. I ended up taking her to a professional trainer who was able to bring her back around after working with her for 3 weeks. She has had over 70 birds shot over her the past 12 weeks and is doing great. She normally sleeps in an outside kennel, but you can bet your last dollar that she will be in her crate with me in the house on new years eve.
Your dog might be fine, but why risk it? Bring her inside!
