3rd heat is a little young, I am going to be breeding my little female when she turns 2. I would probably wait a bit so you get a better idea of what she is gonna be like. Just me though.

Keep her in shape and if you only plan to breed once she should be fine. my self I try to wait till 2 1/2 to breed.

What about your dog at 1 makes you want to breed it?

Take a look at Gundog Central and see how many GSP dogs/pups/litters are for sale.....can you say market glut.

And a lot have higher titled sir and dams.... Or just sires.... May get stuck with a lot of dogs or have them end up in shelters because the owners didn't get what they expected.

A good policy. My opinion. Don't breed dogs before they are 2yr. You need time to see if they are worthy of being bred. Specifically, do they hunt proficiently and can they physically stand up to a full season. You can't get this perspective before their second year in the field. Like I said, my opinion.

Make sure you have a home for them before you breed (a long list). I just found homes for mine after 9 mouths. Corse they were Britts .
What I would call started dogs. So I'll be politically correct and have my bitch spayed in February after the end or hunting season.

She must be one nice year old female to have them all sold a year before you even breed her.Do you already know the stud?

I've had people offer to lease mine but too many unknowns in doing that.

I'll stick with having peoples name on a list and plan on selling them accordingly. If no one wants to buy them I have a back up plan..

Havent done this with a dog but a horse yes. Used a contractual agreement, fellow had her bred to a stud he wanted a foal out of, she stayed on our farm guy paid vet bills etc. After weaning he took foal and agreement was ended. I imagine it would be the same with any female of any species, the contract needs to be a legal thing too drawn up by a lawyer (Dad did it this way to protect himself, reg a TB with jockey club and you will know what I mean it cost a bit and ducks must be in line).
