GSP drooling in the car

Post by taylor16 » Tue Jan 10, 2012 6:56 pm

Planning on driving my 6 month old GSP 6 hours to a training kennel this weekend. I've been trying to get my pup used to carrides but she can't seem to shake her insane amount of drooling. She has vomited once before. Any advice?

As some one who gets car sick, even though she isn't vomiting , she feels like she needs to. Lots of saliva is formed before vomiting.

There is an anti nausea pill for dogs. Ask the vet for the name.

If the person or the dog can sit high enough to see the road, they won't feel sick.

Had a vet recommend Bonine and have used it with success. Works like Dramamine but doesn't make the drowsy. For light cases I've given dogs ginger cookies with good success.

And make it ride in the back.

....and bring lots of paper towels.

But really, I had a badly carsick beagle. He did do well with gingersnap cookies, and was much better riding when he was tired (after hunting he never got sick). But get the gingersnap cookies with real pieces of ginger - the box I'd buy was brown and in the "good cookie" section with the nicer quality/more holistic foods.

+2 on the crate.

The guys on Mythbusters found that candied ginger decreased motion sickness more than any commercial 'drug' with humans. Man, that's one study I'd never be a subject for.

Maybe some kind of sedative. My ESS drooled all the way from Minot to Mankato. Not sick, just excited, then habit. I use a safety harness for her, with a waterproof blanket cover to protect the seats. A towel between the seats helps also.(and yes, she is a little spoiled).
Why own a dog? There's a danger you know,

You can't own just one, for the craving will grow.

There's no doubt they're addictive, wherein lies the danger.

While living with lots, you'll grow poorer and stranger.

Does this help the dog? Or is it so you don't have to worry about it?

Fresh air helps with our setter, don't know if its from the air or being able to see out. Dooling is an issue until

I'm not looking to help the dog. Its a dog not a person. It should ride in a crate. My dogs ride in my box in the back of the truck or most of the time in the horse trailer.

So you don't have to deal with it... It is a dog.

All though I agree with the crate or dog box 100%. Why would you not want to help the dog?,

I would be concerned if my dog continued to vomit in the back of the pickup and I was unaware of it on a 6 hour road trip to Huntington. *Luckily my dog doesn't have that issue, just becomes antsy and a raging turd. I might also be concerned that the dog might not hunt even close to maximum potential if he/she just lost its breakfast several times over.

Long trips with recovery time, you can't beat a proper vet dispensed dose of Ace.

Dogs generally get better with time. BUT IMO it is safer for the dog and you for the dog to be in a crate in the back of the car/truck/suv.

Besides first time your dog tackles a skunk I can assure you, you will wish you had a crate and a truck.
