How old is you Lab?
What do you believe would be the benefit or what do you wish for an end result?
Are you having problems getting the dog into the water?

With all that: I do what you describe on occasion. Mostly for a young dog just to get them out in the water and to follow me around. Also it is a good thing to do if you hunt flooded timber in waders, just to get the dog used to you being in the water taking the retrieve from them and I would set up a platform for the dog to sit on for that particular drill.

Duke was over a year when we introduced him to water. Met Glenn at a resivour about half way between us and Glenn got right out in the water with him. Duke loves retrieving so the idea was get in the water and play fecth with him.

If it is a young dog I would wait until it warms up. You want him to love the water.
