Leatherman
Whats the best leatherman or similar tool for under $50? Any suggestions?
Re: Leatherman
Ranger, I'm not sure what the model of this gerber is called, but it has faired very well. I like that the pliers retract into the handle, and the blade was made by gerber so it's descently sharp steel.
A little research on the web will produce the ideal multi-tool for you. It seems to be a personal choice and what you need it to do. I need the can opener, the pliers, the philips screwdriver, and the knife to survive my daily life at work. Now if only gerber would hear my cries and put an attachment for a Stihl star-wrench in there I would never need anything but my multi-tool and my t-tool to survive
P.S. I believe mine was under $50 at Bi-Mart

Re: Leatherman
I really like my Schrade multi tool. Very well built and tough as nails. In fact I have used it on occasion as a hammer. and a measuring tool.

+1 on the Gerber. I've had half a dozen of these tools in Gerbers, Leathermans, and one off brand, and Gerber is by far my favorite for usability and quality.
Re: Leatherman
I have had a Schrade and a Leatherman. I still have my Gerber. Mine is similar to the one pictured above.

Re: Leatherman
I've got a Leatherman Surge and love it. I bought it this time last year to replace my 1st Leatherman that was one of the earliest versions and 24 years old. I could have still sent it in under the Leatherman 25 year warranty, but couldn't bring myself too, thinking back on all of the abuse and misuse I've put it through.
That said, I love Gerber knives and would expect their multi-tool to be as exceptional. I have a few Schrade knives that I've had through my entire deer hunting career, so would expect quality from them as well. As Benny said, a lot of it is just personal choice. Me, I like a Leatherman.

Re: Leatherman
that's a nice looking multi-tool. I checked it out on cabelas, the only snag I saw was no belt holder? I would hate packing a leatherman in my pocket, I can barely tolerate my car keys stabbing me in the thighRanger351 wrote:Thinkin bout a leatherman wingman. Re: Leatherman
Gerber Suspension multitool is the best multitool under $50 from my experiences. I lost my last one and bought a Leatherman that everyone raves about and I have really been let down. I want to go back to my Gerber Suspension for half the price!!
This comes from a guy who HATES Gerber knives.

Re: Leatherman
I only have a couple of complaints about the Leatherman tools that I have, and I have 3 or 4 different Leatherman models (just don't ask me what they are called!). First off, I don't need a serrated knife blade. But I do want a better quality knife blade that holds an edge longer than 5 seconds. The other thing they should have is #1 Phillips too, so why not swap out the serrated blade with a #1 phillips?
I usually carry a multi tool grouse hunting, just in case one of the dogs gets into a porcupine. Hasn't happened yet, but it's happened to friends' dogs when we've been hunting together, so it could have happened to one of my dogs too.

Re: Leatherman
I've had four different Leatherman's. I keep a Wave in the truck. It's a heavy bugger but has a lot of good tools on it. I now carry the Leatherman Skeletool, I think it's called. All it has is the knife blade and the pliers. I can but rope, gut a bird, and pull quills. That's all I need. I don't like a heavy knife on my side.
