Dog Jumping Up

I know I have commented on here before about this same situation, but I am still having the hardest time keeping my dog from jumping up on people when he gets excited. He is about 1 and ½ years old now but still hasn’t figured out that jumping up on people is unacceptable. He doesn’t have this problem with me at all, he doesn’t even attempt to jump up on me, but when other people come around he goes crazy. How do I train him that this is unacceptable to do with EVERYONE? It is frustrating because I try to tell people that he does it to, to not allow it on them but they just stand there and turn their back on him, but that doesn’t teach him anything. Should I put the collar on him and zap him every time he attempts it, or what should I do? It sucks because anytime I have people over at my house he has to go either outside or in his dog run because he is so obnoxious. Please, any thoughts or ideas would be great. Thank you!

Have different friends come over and have them do the same thing you did to get him to quit. Make sure you tell them first!

Exactly as Don said. I would keep a short leash ( 12 inches?) on the dog to put him into a sit position

This is a common problem with excited young dog. When they get to be 13 like one of mine, they don't have the energy to jump up.

I know this is prolly wrong but when my dog was a pup he jumped up alot too, so we taught him that he can only jump when someone asks him to dance. Now he wont jump unless someone asks him to dance. He is the preffered dance partner for all women at a party.

After reading your concern I think you should put the collar on your guests..They're the ones who need the training ....On a more serious note; Fill a small plastic bottle with some gravel. When the dog jumps or is about the jump, rattle/shake the bottles to cause a distraction..I had done this for obedience training and works every time. The dog eventually learns to associate it and stops jumping on people.

This is what I have done to stop my dog from jumping. May or may not work for you. I would have someone encourage the dog to jump up and as soon as he does have them flip him over backwards. Have them grab the paws and send him over. Then encourage him to do it again and repeat. After a bit he will think twice. They learn real quick that this will happen every time he jumps on someone. Again this is just the way I did it.

I totally agree that the people he jumps up on are the ones to blame, and I don't know about you, but it is so frustrating to me when your trying to train your dog, but other people around you let him do exactly the opposite of what you are trying to teach him. But at the same time, i take blame and I need to be a lot more enforceful when they do let him get away with that stuff. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Yes, that is wrong. "HUG," is for jumping up. "DANCE," is for spinning and weaving between legs.

I have taught dogs to jump up on command and also use letting them jump up on me as a reward.

I would try putting a leash on the dog every time someone comes to the door and stepping on it to limit the dogs ability to jump up. Every time he tries to jump he'll get yanked back down and you can give your off command. That way you have complete control over the situation. This was helpful to me because many of my friends are dog lovers and enjoy having a dog jump up on them....grandma on the other hand did not...so, not only are you training the dog to stop jumping on people, you also take your friends out of the picture as well, which can be helpful.

I just came across this thread and I have a emabarassing and hilarious story to share that has to do with jumping up.
My lil guy hardly ever jumps up on anything or anybody, but today was a different story...haha

I took him to a field close to the house that is our usual spot. I have permission to hunt the fields on either side of the road.
I park kinda of close to the road because the owner cuts hay off part of it and I dont like to drive on his grass.
Just trying to be respectful of his land.
Anyways, we take off and walk the field and about 30 mins or so I see a Higway State Trooper go down the road and slow down and look at my car.
He goes down the road and comes back to my car.
I call my dog to me and put the leash on him and make my way back to the car
As I get to the road the trooper see's me and pulls up the road to me.
I step up to his window and he ask if it was my car and what i was doing and so on...normal shake down.
As I am explaining everything to him, my lil guy jumps up on his door and sticks his head into the window.
Needless to say I was totally embarassed, but at the same time I wanted to bust out laughing, but I dont think the trooper was none to happy....

I watched a friend who used to train labs deal with a jumper. When the dog would jump up, he would not say a word or make a fuss. He would just catch the front paws and hold them up, and with one foot he would just reach in and put a little pressure on one of the dog's back paws. Nothing severe, just uncomfortable. All the dog wanted to do was get the heck out of that helpless position.

There are several different methods that will work to fix the problem....Myself, I also use the knee to the chest and when they stop jumping up on me, all I have to do is scold them if they start to jump on somebody else, but once broke from jumping on me, mine rarely try to jump up on anybody.
