Anyone have success getting chukars to home?
Anyone have success getting chukars to home?
I've read that you can get chukar to home back to a coop if its on the same property that you are training in. Anyone have any success doing this and what's the secret. Thanks!

Do a search for johny house birds. You can use chukar the same as you would a bob white.

I have done it in the past, most return but not as good as quail though. Make sure your entry funnel is big enough for chukar.

I've been slowly collecting supplies to built a flight pen and a second johnny house. I can't stand how fragile Bobs are so I've been looking into Chukar. Something that really tugged at me was an article I read (don't have a clue where I found it at) that said Chukar are quit to cannabalize. Not just in cramped spaces, but if you have the same so many birds - say you buy 200 birds and shoot/lose occasional birds without adding any - they consider themself a covey real fast and if you add birds to the covey there's a huge chance they established covey will go tribal on them. Not sure if it's true, but I'll try to find the article.

Have a friend that uses them, has about 25 in callback. Rarely shoots any till end of a couple seasons then shoots all within a few weeks and starts all over with new birds. He says you have to start young with the recall but they will do it. I believe him since he always has them in a johnny house.

A bigger entry hole means more possums, housecats and rabbits. I would give them a landing ledge up above for them to escape. I would check the johnny every morning. Just a thought. A quail funnel is 2 1/8 at the narrow end. I don't know what it would be for a chukar.

You could always look into getting a predator-proof funnel.

Man, it would really be great if you could post photos of the process, progress or finished product. I'd like to try one after seeing how you do.

hopefully I can get around to it soon I have access to a metal bending brake at work so I think I can pull it off. The biggest issue would be adjusting the thing to the right weightStoneface wrote:Man, it would really be great if you could post photos of the process, progress or finished product. Re: Anyone have success getting chukars to home?
You'll get it licked. Probably just find out what the maximum weight of a chukar is then find something that is a quarter or half pound heavier and put it in the funnel then take it down to the hardware store and test different springs until you fit a winner. Are you going with a spring or something else? It would be good if you could rig it so when a varmint is in it and the funnel drops it traps him inside so he's in there when you check the birds. Get rid of him so he doesn't bother them again.
That reminds me of a story about my grandpa. He was MEAN old man. He made what he called a hot box. It was a was a wooden box he built with a swinging door. He ran an extension cord to the box - the long orange type you use with your power tools - and stripped the wire at the end so it was exposed then slayed it across the bottom of the box. He'd put the box in the yard, bait it with cat food and when cats went in after the bait he'd pull a line that shut the door. He'd walk over to the end of the extension cord, plug it in and walk away while the cat fried. He was a mean old man.
