GSP for hunting and retreiving

Post by Hunting cop » Wed Feb 15, 2012 7:20 pm

I am wondering if anyone has any expierience with using German Shorthaired pointers for bird hunting and retrieving. I mean retrieving like quail and retrieving ducks as well. I don't have one yet but I am considering buying one. Drop me a line if you have any advice on this. Thanks!

Good for all kinds of bird retrieving, if properly trained, except for late season duck. (Their coat is not that of a Chessie.)

Although GSPs were originally bred to point & retrieve some lines of GSPs in the US reportedly have stronger retrieving instincts than others. Although they can nearly all be force broken to retrieve that requires extra training effort. It wouldn't hurt to find out if the sire & dam were natural retrievers. If there have been previous litters from this pairing ask to talk with one of the pup's owners for a reference & ask if their dog retrieves naturally. By the way the same advice could be given about nearly any of the pointing breeds, not just GSPs. I had an English Setter that was a heck of a natural waterfowl retriever, even though that's not commonly believed to be their long suit.

Ours swims like a fish and is coming along to be a fine pointing dog. Our older GSP is great in the water - early season only, she doesn't have the coat for freezing conditions. She is a fantastic retriever and a very, very good pheasant dog.

My good friend Scott B. told me about a contest he is into where the dog jumps out into the water and is measured for distance. I am gonna do this as soon as it starts up. :) they love the water.

http://crystalkennels.com/home.cfm does both with their dogs.

Also this is probably the closest NAVHDA chapter for you, where you can talk with like minded folks. :D

Or maybe this chapter is closer depending on where in KY you are.

Hunting Cop:
I do both water fowl and ruffed grouse. They are great dogs and as they are categorized, very versatile. You can hunt feather, or fur if you wish.
The best part of training is seeing the light come on in your little prot'eg'e.

I believe you will find that many GSP's make great water dogs (barring breaking ice). NAVHDA and the NADKC organizations have portions of their tests where the dogs are required to fulfill different retrieves in the water. I personally believe that has helped breeders who run in those organizations determine better pairings when breeding so their dogs will be successful in their respective venues. Good Luck!

Hunting Cop,
GSP's are fantatic dogs for hunting upland and will retrieve ducks very very well. I owned a real KS German Shorthair fully
trained before I purchased her, she was a great V dog, who retrieved ducks like a Lab. Rosie was 80 LBs and worked hard all day long
in the grouse woods, was faster than most people wanted to believe and was a master at finding snow rousting Grouse.
Rosie our German Shorthair retrieved more Wood Ducks in the LA bayou country than you can count.
I highly recommend these dogs to any person wanting a serious Gun Dog.

We do A LOT of dock jumping and have NEVER had an ACL injury in 7 years. We have some of the largest jumping dogs in the country as well. Dock jumping is no more difficult on a dog than hunting. And we do hunt with our dogs as well. Good structure and good conditioning do wonders for do athletes.
