how do you guys transport your dog?

Post by trigger1989 » Mon Apr 16, 2012 10:38 am

I'm thinking about going to south Dakota to see some family this summer and I've been looking at different airlines and they are all saying they only allow small dogs as a carry on. Is my only option to drive with my gsp? Any input would help, thanks in advance!

Well I always put them in my pick up all 4 or 7 whengoing to hunt with stops every 2-3 hours.

I found they don't mind traveling if they use to it even in a small space/crate they just want to be with you, and go with !

You can ship them in the cargo hold of the plane but it's pretty expensive. I'd plan on $300 per dog and some airlines have temperature restrictions as their holds aren't climate controlled.

I believe it a Fed. regulation about the temp. extremes. Can't go if over whatever, or below whatever.

They do heat the cargo hold of some planes. At least they tell you they do. That is what happened to me.
They also gave my dog a small dish of water, that was frozen solid when I got him here at home. When questioned they said they put it in there frozen! Sure they did! In any case I told them to not give him anything. He would fine.

So I am not too big on the airlines and shipping mu dog in cargo.

My buddy from Atlanta flies up to to NE every year to hunt with his shorthair(usually flies Southwest). You have to have a health certificate from a vet within 10 days of flying with the dog. It usually cost him more to fly the dog up than it does him(he gets discount tickets for himself  ). He's never had any problems getting the dog here in good shape and they always get him out first because he barks the whole trip

Also depending on the country you flying to. Any dogs to SA need a whole lot of tests done before entering the country.

Alaska Air Animal Express, temperature controlled, flies from Phoenix to Sioux Falls as cargo. Cost is wieght and distance based.

Used them several time to get my setters to Alaska for Ptarmigan and to Tennessee for field trials, dogs were in excellent shape after every flight.

They fly in their crate in the cargo area just like horses do. The cargo area is pressurized using the same air as the cabin is so it's no big deal. Can't fly a dog in the main cabin unless it's a puppy or has it's therapy certificate but if the crate/ dog is small enough it can fly free just like a normal carry on bag. Some airlines won't fly dogs at all though so contact those that fly where you are going to make sure.

You'll have to ensure that the which ever airline accepts animals to which ever airport, both ways. My wife had an issue flying our bulldog on the return flight the dog had to go on a different airplane to a different airport. Which was a huge pain in the rear. The cost was about 100 bucks a flight. (Two years ago).
Being in the military, I've loaded and unloaded more plains then I'd like to admit. Every cargo hold I've ever been inside of was always cold. So I would throw a blanket inside the kennel.

And yes they do freeze the water so it lasts longer and doesn't spill when loading the dog. They told u's to do that ahead of time as well. Also, take some large zip ties to secure the door. 7 years ago they dropped a crate containing a prized Whippet returning from Westminster. The price to fly dogs tripled after that incident.
