Make sure you get the right dog for you, you can import any breed from any country.

Check the breed and the breeding you can put 2 months of time into a 10+ year hunting partner, its worth every penny.

What kind of hunting, terrian etc. will depend on the breed, your choice tells me you not sure.

Gsp - point and retrieve
Gwp - point and retrieve little tuffer than gsp
Lab - mainly retrieve
Springer - flush and retrieve

and

They come in ranging varieties from shoe lace, close to running out to sunset ..... or sunset with gps collar to get you dog back.

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE !

I spent three years on a radar site outside of Sembach back in the late 60's. One of my favorite places to go was the Heidelburg Zoo! And if they still do the Burning of the Castle on the 4th of July, it's super. We used to sit across the river from it and watch! That castle is quite a place too.
I pity the man that has never been loved by a dog!

thank you everyone for the help. Francois i think ur right i shoud make up my mind but its hard to decide on one breed (especially since ive never hunted birds). i have researched the different styles (flushing & pointing) and i believe either would be fine, i mostly just want a 4 legged companion to work with as a hobby for me and my wife.

DonF, yes they still do the burning of the castle :) ,im looking foward to it this year after mssing it last year.

Germany's probably the one place in the world where the mere thought of having to import a gundog is carrying coals to Newcastle.

The deutscher wachtelhund is as good an all-rounder as can be found.

DD's are by far the most popular and widely used hunting dog in Europe, and my personal choice for many years now. Here is a link to the breed clubs in Germany and North America. I would be glad to help you if you would like, just remember you will be getting a whole lot more than just a bird dog :D

Not even close, not by a longshot - better check your statistics. Better yet, have chiendog rebut them. Five times as many English setters registered a year in Italy alone as Drahts in Germany - and 95 percent of them are working birddogs.

I am not talking about # of dogs registered  I guess I should have said versatile hunting dog, wasn't talking about bird dogs or retrievers
