Pup Necessities.

Post by KyCountry » Wed Apr 25, 2012 10:38 am

Hey guys.

I'm preparing for my GSP pup and have been browsing Gun Dog Supply for a while now. I did some searching on here but could find a post related to this, so I was wondering what everyone's puppy necessities were. I'm wondering what is needed for the next 6 months, mostly training wise, but everything else as well. By the way, interested in both upland bird supplies as well as waterfowl.

crate- big enough for the dog to stand up straight , turn around and lie down. To save money get an adult cage for later and block it off for now.

Crate, collar, leash, dog food, patience, and time to play and enjoy your puppy.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

Industrial spray water bottle. Corrective tool for bad behavior.

Socialize that bugger as much as possible!

You will need something appropriate for them to chew on or you wont be very happy with them  I also like to get them used to a check cord early on, usually need one with my dogs anyway.

I've used these and they have worked well. The crate comes with a divider which allows you to customize the interior of the crate with respect to the size of the pup.

I find the metal crates all the time on craigslist. I buy the smaller one for potty training and then when the pup outgrows that one, resell it on craigslist and buy a larger sized one. I've also just used a plywood piece cut to fit fairly well and zip tie it in there to make the space smaller (has to be a bit big b/c it has to fit through the door).

My pup necessities:

appropriate sized crate (small)
check cord
leash
Puppy obedience classes (when shots are completed)
Kong (fill with peanut butter or freeze chicken broth in there) for when you leave him in the crate
Chewies (antlers work well) - rawhide has some issues and is a choking hazard
Lots of time and attention and LOTS of trips everywhere (except where other dogs frequent - until pup is fully vaccinated - 12 weeks/16 weeks)
Socialization with other fully vaccinated dogs while pup is still small (9wks on)
I use small paint rollers for retrieving fun down the hallway - not for pup to chew on, but only when you're playing with him

i go to butcher shop and have them cut MARROW bones in small size for puppy.
they will chew on that for hours and it only cost 35 cents or so for one that will last week or so.
i put in frig when not using it.

Thanks for all the tips. Gun Dog Supply will love me. Picked up some of these things at Wal Mart yesterday. The money-spending officially begins.
