My own form of "roading"

Post by 12 Volt Man » Wed Jul 28, 2004 4:50 pm

The last few weeks I have decided to work hard at getting myself and my dog in shape for the upcoming hunting season.
I wanted to build some muscle bulk and some stamina in my dog. I hope to have him ready for a NSTRA trial in September.

I also started the Atkins diet recently for myself. I started riding my mountian bike around the neighborhood every night. One night I decided I might as well bring the dog. So off we go each night my dog on his leash and me on my bike. Several near crashes happened the first few times. A starling ran accross the road one night and I nearly crashed when Cooper cut in front of me. He does great now. His muscles are becoming more well defined. He can go at a fast speed for a lot longer than when we first started.

Me, I have lost 18 pounds in two and a half weeks!

Good on you and Coop'. Mountain or road biking is the best form of cardio improvement excerising there is out there. I recently read an article that rung like a bell that suggested that you may want to include some long walks in full hunting gear. This will improve your stamina. Yea I know the looks frim the neighbors may be a turn off, but if you think about it riding a bike or walking in shorts is a far cry from packing on brush pants, a vest with shells and a couple of tasty Pheasanys in the bag. And those darn hills, whew!

good way to get the dog in shape...i started running my dog off the bike back when he was about 8 months old. cant do it much now because of the heat. the only problem was she was a pup, and a little to crazy for me, so instead of breaking my head i descided to invest into a a bike restraint for the dog. it works great! if you want more info, you can see it here...http://www.cabelas.com/products/Cpod0025602.jsp
i think i got it at around $30 dollars, but that was a few years ago. works great, if you need any more info reply, or e mail me. now i only have to try riding it around the city without getting threatened. to many animal rights member in the city, and they always think you are going to kill your dog when excersizing it. had a few people chase me in there car to tell me off and tell me i was going to kill a dog by running her...just pure ignorant people. good luck

When you road your dog by M Bike use a roading harness & try to get the dog to PULL , this will help build mass evenly.
I road my Gordons off a A T V . It allows me to road as many as 10 dogs at a time .
My roading program starts Aug 1 & i slowley build my dogs up to 1.5 hours everyother day.
