Weird question.

Post by cptn » Wed May 16, 2012 10:47 am

The other day when I was visiting my Brittany pup, the breeder told me that the day before, he received his firstt puppy shot, a dewormer, and then she paused, gave me a sly look, and said, "...and his you-know-whats" done.

I nodded and smiled, acting like I knew what she was talking about, but I had no clue. He's six weeks!

What are his you-know-what's, and what did she do? Do you guys have a clue?

He already had his tail and dews removed. ...Did she mean anal glands?

We have pups tested for worms and then deworm them at 6 weeks if necessary, give1st shots at 6 weeks, and cut nails once a week.

No idea what she was talking about.

I've never heard of a pup that young needing his anal glands expressed. Maybe he got his nails trimmed/done? I know I always clip their nails when they are young, puppy nails are sharp!!

Also, how sure are you that she said "what's" and not just "what"? Because if it's not plural I'd bet it's the microchip.

You should check with your breeder and let me know if I was right 8)

Sounds like she neutered him? :o

That's what it sounds like! But he wasn't, and definitely not because he's still just a baby!

I get his vet records soon. I will let you know!

Maybe the vet checked to make sure the "boys" were where they should be?

This would be my guess. He was checked to make sure everything was falling into place.

I thought about that, too, but I could have sworn she said "done." Maybe she just talks weird.

I was embarrassed to ask at first, but since you guys are having the same reaction I did, I think I am going to just ask her. I see her this Sunda.

I would certainly ask. I cannot imagine what she was talking about. I would have taken that to mean that he was neutered except you would have seen some sort of incision .

I would ask too. Really bugs me when people talk like that. To many people have no idea what they're talking about.

I agree, last time i checked a so called breeder should not be trying to leave their clients wondering, IMO they should educate if they can and help a new gun dog owner and their dog reach its potential. Client breeder relationship should be ongoing enough to be able to rely on the breeder for questions. If not I would not return to them!!

I would just call and ask, you may feel stupid, but that feeling isn't long lived. Kinda like that saying, "pain is only temporary"...lol

If it turns out he was neutered don't take the pup. Neutering that early can cause way too many problems. cj

I haven't walked yet! He wasn't neutered. I don't remember an incision! If he was and I missed it, I will walk, but the most logical thing I can think of would be what was said earlier! I hope the vet was just making sure his cash and prizes are developing properly. Gonna go with that until I ask her personally!

I'd get on the horn with the breeder and ask her to explain exactly what she is talking about. No shame in that.

YES , don't keep us waiting. No shame in not knowing what she was talking about. Seems everyone on this forum doesn't know what she meant. She was at fault for not talking like an adult and being more clear.

anal glands was the first thing that came to my mind, but it would be very uncommon for one that young to need that.

I told a friend of mine about this.... He had a very good answer. They have only had this problem once or twice and its weird how it doesn't happen to females....

The testicles on male Brittany pups need to be pulled down around 6-7 weeks or else the pup won't grow and it will then be called a hampster and you will only get $20.00 for it.

We're not phone-talkers, so I shot her an e-mail yesterday! She should reply by today or tomorrow, and as soon as she does, I will definitely let you guys know!

I have a vet record book for my Britt pup, and I wrote down "you-know-whats." :]

Aw! I'm sorry, I forgot to reply. I e-mailed her a while back to ask, and she said that she meant the vet checked to make sure his testicles were coming in the way they were supposed to. I figured that was what she meant, but it could have been anything. Haha!
