The oster A 5 is great clipper but they will get hot. I got one from a woman that cuts for a living for $25 but the housing is cracked but they work great. Ebay is a great place to shop for used oster A5 and blades for clippers. You also can get parts for this model but they are not cheap.

Andis or Oster will pro style will come with a #10 takedown blade. Use a snap on comb to increase length of the hair. Probably a 1/2" would look good. Doesn't matter what brand you choose, get some Oster KoolLube and use it frequently. Keep the blade clean, also.

That's an older single speed, so it won't have the granny low speed for heavy hair, but you shouldn't need it. Cord and casing look good. NIB of the current version of the A5 SS is nearly $200. I'd go $80, maybe.

I have a Wahl Stable Pro that I bought over ten years ago. I have used it to shave down two horses once a year and do periodic trims of foot hair and mane hair. It does a fine job. It should work well for one dog and last a long time.

You can vary the cut from a 10 to a 30 with the press of a lever on the side of the cutterhead and it came with a variety of combs. they also sell a 2 1/2 wide cutterhead which is what I use for the horses.

The Andis is a great unit but it is kinda big.

Whatever unit you buy remember that washing the dog before trimming will VASTLY extend the life of the cutterblades. Cutting hair is one thing. Cutting dirt and sand embedded in the hair is quite another. Keeping the blade lubricated is also key to good performance.

Professional groomer- I'dbuy an Oster. ! or 2 dogs I'd stick with Wahl. You willcome out ahead. I have had my Wahl for several years and it is still running as good as ever. Keep any clipper you have clean and lubricated which is the secret to longlife.

I went with Andis clippers based on the feedback from two local grooming salons and reviews online. Plus I talked to Petedge as well. I clip a lab and a Brittany. Make sure you get a multi speed clipper whatever you do. Mine is 2700 and 3400 I believe. Wish I would have went with the 3400 and 4200 speed model since I never use the low speed. I have a #10 blade and a #5 blade. The #10 gets used 90% of the time but I also have a #5 to get in some of the tough spots or when I have to go against the hair. A #5 is basically the same as a #10 when you go against the grain.

If the clippers work well, it's a steal. I paid $150 for mine and got the stuff you see there.

When I had Springer's, the lady that clipped them for me used a #10 blade on the head and thinning shears on the body. I do my own now and strip them down with the #10 blade, setter's. I leave the feathering on the leggs but trim it so it's not flooping all over and the base of the tail for about 3" and trim what's left with sissors. I have a #4 blade which leaves the hair a bit longer but I need a #4 skip tooth to make it work well. Skip tooth to first cut it and #4 finish to finish it. On a springer I'd probably use the #10 on it's head and ears and the #4 0n the body.

Not that it matters so much with clipping one dog, but Andis seems to have a lot lower vibration than Oster.

I think $80 would be a supper buy. Buy a #4 blade and you have all you need. I never had much luck with the clip on guards.

I keep between 8 - 12 Britts in my kennels and they get shaved 2 times a year. I use an oster 2 speed but, I think the key is using sharp blades. I bathe and brush my dogs before I trim them. I use a #7 blade and brush and spray it frequently with "cool care" by andis. I works well for me. I think a #10 can scalp them and expose them to sun burn.

I bought a used Andis 2 speed. Works great but does get hot -- just spray it down with the cleaner/oil. I got it from a lady going out of the horse business. I have bought 3 more blades for it and a set of combs so that momma uses on me as well. I think I paid $80 and thought it was a good deal. The blades are much cheaper on-line. The book says to clip them lots shorter then we do -- we usually go with 1/2". We were worried about sun burn when those crazy Britts are chasing lizzards. Watch Craigslist.
