4th of july concerns!!

Postby WillieELk78GSP » Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:31 pm

I have some concerns about the 4th of july and my new pup, I will only have her for about 2 weeks until the 4th of july and she will not be gun broke, is there anything I can do from keeping her from getting scared of all the loud noise? Should I put her up in a kennel for the evening or what? I live in a small washington community and it gets pretty loud on the 4th. Any info helps!! thanks in advance

I hate having young pups around the 4th...
I just try to keep them away from the activities and stay home with them myself. I get new treats and chew toys and give them fun times and try to show them that i don't notice or care about it. If you are too nervous about how you pup will act then your pup will just know you are nervous. And they will start thinking whatever is different than usual is making you nervous. So far none have had issues.

There is some evidence that the flash and sound combination causes a stronger adverse reaction, so putting the pup in a crate in the quietest part of the house would be a good move. You might also consider Rescue Remedy.

+1 on the quietest part of the house. Turn some background noise on also (radio).

Funny thing about the 4th, noises. Have a 12 year old GSP hates 4th and thunder, just looks for an open closet and dark place. Pull out a gun and she is all over it. ready to go, gets wicked excited still when I shoot. Even if it is skeet targets.

But definately, quiet dark place till all is done hopefully with you. But if you are nervous about it she will be. Don't make a big deal of it. Give her some raw meat or something a couple times during the night. Just a taste.

We put our old dog down in the basement with his kennel and a bunch of stuff piled on and around the kennel, and turn on a radio so that it drowns out the sound of the fire crackers.
