Have You Ever?

Post by Onk » Sun Jun 17, 2012 8:37 am

This is going to sound strange, but I was asked if I have ever ate pigeon! This person had heard that they were very good and the in England and Ireland they are eaten all the time. They thought since I keep pigeons for training and shoot some of them that I might eat them as well. I have not but thought I would pass this question along, have any of you ever ate pigeon and what does it compare to?

They tasted similar to dove in my opinion. I ate them along time ago before I started using them for training. They were wild pigeons I had shot out of friend's barn. Squab is a delicacy in some other countries. They were ok but gamey in my opinion. Probably tastier with some type of sauce on them.

With 7 kids and being very poor my Dad shot anything that moved. Pigeon is good - mild. need 2 birds per person though.
One day i was having my boyfriend over for lunch. He came from a rich family. After lunch he asked me "What was that meat. It was great." I said, "Squirrel". 8)

Pigeon is good. Pluck, brine, roast. Not a city rat but a respectable barn/silo pigeon is good eats. Something different, I like it.

I used to keep some Kings and Mondains with my homers. They were bigger with the Mondains getting up to near 3 lbs. We had them for eating and they are pretty good. Lots of ways to fix them.

In England, pigeon shooting is a big deal. You can sell the cleaned wood pigeon carcasses to meat dealers, much of whose market is in Belgium or France, for about 75p or 3/4 pound. About $1.20, the last time I looked into it.

Big bags of over 500 birds are not unknown, though not usual.

Squab was part of the final, 11-course meal on the Titanic, considered very high-class. One of my daughters works part-time at a concert hall, where they recently had some kind of Titanic-themed event and served the same 11-course meal. It was a pricey deal, and I had to chuckle that people were paying so much to eat pigeon. The dogs and I sure could have had a lot of fun with that meal, prior to the birds meeting their demise. :)

There are pigeons in the mountains out here that don't resemble the ones you train with. They are very very good eating.

There may be an issue to consider if you medicate, with some drugs, your own pigeons re using them as a food source.
