Kennel question?

Post by Onk » Thu Jun 21, 2012 10:26 pm

I was getting ready, wiring, my kennel for either ceiling fans or some type of mountable small shop fans in my pens which are open air. Thought it would help cool the dog plus cause a draft to ward of some of the flying pest. Was told the fans where a bad idea and would cause issues with the dog....any thoughts?

He just said health issues, if I'm understand right, bronchial type health issues. I've never heard this before, but then again I have not seen many fans in dog pens!

It may if you blow damp dirty air directly in the dogs face. Fresh air circulation is a good thing. Is this a closed in Kennel?

I don't think it would cause a problem if it is just ceiling fans used to keep the air moving. As far as the flying insects, I have found keeping it dark works wonders. I put styrofoam over the windows and the dogs like to lay in the dark cooler conditions when the flys and bugs are out.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

I am no expert, but I have always felt that the most important thing to consider when providing a dog with a heat source, or a 'cool source', is to make sure that the dog can get away from it if they want to. In other words, I would set the fan so that it blows on one end of the pen. The dog can then choose to lay on that end in the breeze, or lay on the other end out of the breeze.

I have a box fan mounted over the top of my dog houses. The dog houses are made of concrete block with open tops. The concrete block made it easy to hose and clean out. I just lay a rubber mat in it for padding. The dog houses are recessed into the wall of the barn. This causes a direct draft on the dogs if the lay in the dog house. It really depends on the dog. Some dogs like lying directly under the fan and others just assume lay on the concrete in front of the doggie door where they get a secondary draft of air coming from the dog house. I haven’t experienced any problems yet, although this is the first summer with the new kennels.

Onk-
I have had fans over mine for about six years and never had a problem with anything (other than dogs chewing through 2 of the fans power cords  )
