Lab pups came early

Post by Dave C » Fri Jul 20, 2012 5:54 am

Fern seemed hot and had a bit of discharge, so Mrs Dave C took her to the vets because we thought she might have an infection, her pups were not due for over a week so better safe than sorry.

The vet could not hear any heart beats so off to the main vet in the town she went for a scan, but the wife feared the worst at that point.

The scan showed 3 pups and the vet said she may have a slight infection and gave her antibiotics but said it was nothing serious as she wes well off her labour and everything seemed normal, the wife was surprised at only 3 pups as Fern was huge but you have to take what the vets say.

When she got Fern home 20 mins later she had her first pup on the kitchen floor, she then over the next 4 hours gave birth to 11 strong healthy pups (what do vets know anyway),

Here are some pics at 1 week old

All are doing really well, although the did catch us on the hop a bit.
Has anyone else had an early litter?

Congratulations Dave:

So glad the pups and Fern are okay. That is a large litter. That was quite the miscount.
Who was the male? What did you like about him?
Are they all spoken for.
I wish I were in position for one of those. Fern just seems like the perfect hunting dog.

Good looking pups, I agree with Ruff, Fern looks great and seems to do it all. I bet it is a real nice litter.

Too bad you are not in the states!

Thanks for the replies guys.
The pups are 1 week in the pics.

The dog i used is called Delfleet Huckleberry, between him and Fern they have 50 FTCH in there pedigrees as well as his Sire being the International Gundog League winner.
That is all very nice but the main reason i used him was the way he hunted, he hunts very hard hitting the thickest cover and also like Fern he had a very nice style to him, he also suited her in his size and build.

So fingers crossed the pups should turn out fine hunters, well i hope so i will be keeping one and will let you all know how she gets on.
As for the rest of the litter, 5 were spoken for before she had them and if anyone Fancy's a trip to the UK to pick one up you will get a very warm welcome :D

Very good luck... they look good. I sometimes think nature likes to remind us how little we really know ;)
Glad it was with happy news and puppy breath!
