Gravel road Roading
Gravel road Roading
Been Roading my dogs on a gravel road sometimes just free running to, but the feet and pads keep getting tore up broke nails chunks out of the pads, any thing I can do another way to exercise them?

Sled dog guys use something called Mushers Secret on the pads.

Isn't there a shoulder between the road and the ditch. That is where my dogs run.

The roads built from coarse rushed limestone? You'll probably have to boot them.tompetey wrote:Been Roading my dogs on a gravel road sometimes just free running to, but the feet and pads keep getting tore up broke nails chunks out of the pads, any thing I can do another way to exercise them?

I think it depends on the type of gravel. In most of the mid-west, they use gravel that has been "mined" and crushed. It has a lot of sharp edges and is frequently large enough that it can cause dogs to "roll" their ankles.
Out here in the PacNW, our roads (logging roads) are just carved out of the sides of mountains and are just small rocks made by mother nature. I free road our dogs nearly daily and have never had an injury due to the roads.
Another thing to do is supplement with Zinc Gluconate. This toughens the pads and nails nutritionally, from the inside out.
50 mg Zinc Gluconate a day for a month -- then 3 times a week.

Only time I have had that problem is on volcanic cinders. I change my location to run/road.
