Weird question?

Post by deke » Tue Aug 28, 2012 1:04 pm

My girlfriend is breaks out in hives every time she touches with my younger lab. She does not break out in hives when she touches my older lab. The only difference between the two that I can figure is that the younger lab has much thinner hair, whereas the old dog has wirey old lab hair. I am looking at getting a new pup after next hunting season, and i would like her to be able to touch it. So i was wondering if there is any breeds that i should be paying close attention to?

My sister-in-law has the same problem with both dogs and cats. She does tolerate some dogs and cats, but there doesn't seem to be any way to predict which ones she can deal with and which ones will give her hives. If you want a pup she can handle, she is just going to have to "try it out" and see what happens.

My wife has the same issue as well. Some of it has to do with the dander comes off easier with the thinner haired dogs, also shorter / thinner haired dogs seem to shed more. Our ESS bothers her a little bit, boxer we had to get rid of because she got hives, eyes poured and nose never stopped dripping, and our Pekingese is mostly fine with her. She can hold him for 45 min and get 1 small bump on her arm. Have her talk to her doctor about getting some meds to help her get through it.
